Tourist places in the province of Sullana and its surrounding districts

1. Places in Sullana

1.1. Sullana Mother Church:

It is the main temple of the city known as the Mother Church of the “Holy Trinity”,
located on one side of the Plaza de Armas. It is a modern and slender building of
neoclassical architecture, with a 42-meter-high tower. The work began in 1942 and
was inaugurated on December 8, 1945. In 1960, what is the “nave” of the church
was built and two enormous and beautiful bells were placed in the bell tower,
baptized with the names “María Carmen” and “Trinidad”, made in Spain and a
smaller one built in Italy in 1909 that they recently took it down and placed it on one
side of the altar. Here is the image of the Lord of Agony, authentic patron of Sullana,
his image is located on the right side entering through the main door of the Church.
It is said that during the war with Chile, a Mapocho sergeant named Balmaceda
came to loot the city, entering the temple to steal religious articles; but when he
reached the door he met the gaze of the Lord of Agony and was petrified. No one
knows for sure how this image appears. What is true is that every January 6 there
was a popular festival in honor of him, with novenas and fairs. Over the years it
would transform into what the Kings of Sullana fair is today.

1.2. Sullana Main Square:

It is one of the most beautiful and welcoming places in the city, it has a pool named
“Pedro Fernández”, designed with jets that shoot water up to the dome,
accompanied by colored lights that vary chronometrically. On one side there is a
monument to Francisco Bolognesi.

1.3. Grau de Sullana Square:

with the first bust of Miguel Grau , at the national level. The bust is a true artistic
jewel masterfully sculpted in Carrara marble (Italy). It is located in Plaza Grau de
Sullana, located on Av. José de Lama and Enrique Palacios.

1.4. The New “Artemio Vargas” Bridge:

Known as “Sullana” Bridge or “New” Bridge. Inaugurated on November 3, 1980. It is
a really complex work. In the middle of the sand, a tunnel had to be built that ends
at a height of 12 meters above the river level and from there the bridge structure
was located, which has a length of 348 meters long and 8 meters wide. Above the
tunnel is the “Bolognesi” square. At the end of the '60s, FAP Ensign Horacio Polar
Delgado died when the plane he was driving crashed.
The Old Bridge “Isaías Garrido Ugarte ”:
Known as the “old” bridge, it was inaugurated on July 28, 1937 and built by the
same company that built the EFFIEL tower in Paris. It is a firm and spectacular work
of civil engineering, due to its construction and aesthetics in accordance with the
imposing landscape of the valley that integrates Sullana with the Marcavelica
district. Due to the height of the bridge, it is ideal for bungee jumping.

1.5. Sullana Dam:

This work is part of the Chira-Piura project and serves to manage water resources,
eliminates pumping irrigation and prevents the loss of 250 million cubic meters
annually to the sea. The gates are located at the height of the “Teodomiro” hill. This
dam is crossed by two imposing metal bridges. All surrounded by an indescribable
and paradisiacal green landscape. This dam is ideal for boat rides, going up the
river you reach Querecotillo, enjoying the beautiful landscape in every corner. It is
also an invitation to practice motorboating and water skiing.

1.6. CHIRA TOURIST COMPLEX.

Inaugurated on March 16, 1996. It is located on the left bank of the Chira River
between the two metal bridges: "Isaías Garrido" and "Sullana". This complex
consists of a series of elements for tourist purposes such as: Bolognesi Square
and the Chira Viewpoint.
From any point of this viewpoint you can contemplate the majestic bridges and the
splendid artificial lagoon surrounded by the beautiful nature of the valley.
The cause of the Chira River is special for adventure tourism, in light boats, and as it
passes you can see all the beautiful landscape and the rich flora and fauna of its
surroundings.

In the various districts of Sullana you can find many tourist destinations that are
unmissable for tourists. So we have:

2.1. The duck lagoon (Querecotillo District, 35 minutes from Sullana)

The wetland called “Laguna de los Patos” is located between the hamlets of
Puente de los Serranos and La Horca in the Querecotillo District, 18 km from
the City of Sullana - Piura Region. PERU, is formed due to river precipitation
and the filtration of water from the Miguel Checa canal and the Poechos Dam.
(Marcelo, 2016)
It is a habitat that gains ecological importance because it is located within the
fragile ecosystem of the dry forest, which belongs to the biogeographic strip of
the Tumbesino Endemism region, a region recognized worldwide for its high
level of threatened endemic flora and fauna and for the high degree of
intervention and fragmentation.
The Los Patos Lagoon in Querecotillo becomes an ecological corridor, ideal
for adventure tourism, as it presents a great diversity of species of aquatic birds
that inhabit or arrive for reproductive, migratory or resting purposes and they
can be observed feeding throughout the year. anus. (press, sf)
From 2003 to date, APECOINCA has registered more than 86 species of birds,
07 species of mammals, 08 species of reptiles, 02 of amphibians; Likewise, a
study of fish and other hydrobiological species will be initiated.
Among the most important are the osprey, Tantalus or Gabán stork, Crescent
Duck, Crested Duck, Colorado Duck, Flamingos and Water Cockerels or
Jacana and they can be observed feeding throughout the year, which tells us
that the quality of the water, is still in optimal conditions to house sufficient
nutrients (microorganisms, crustaceans, fish, amphibians, aquatic plants...)
capable of sustaining important communities of living beings.
It is important to note that indiscriminate logging, overgrazing, hunting,
desiccation to obtain land for agricultural extension purposes, and the
inappropriate use of agricultural practices, which is reflected in the consumption
of fertilizers and pesticides, without any consideration, become in one of the
constant threats to the existing flora and fauna of this wetland. (municipality, sf)

It has a capacity of 1000 million cubic meters, when it is completely full its “tail” reaches

Sojo hacienda house, with a model similar to an existing house in Mexico. The material
used was Guayaquil cane, adobe and marble.

This beautiful house has 36 rooms and complementary environments that are stately in
type, predominating a republican neoclassical style, notable on its front. Inside, it has
two beautiful stairs, which, starting equidistant from its base, converge on the second

Located in the Marcavelica district. They are natural outcrops of thermal, sulfurous and
medicinal waters that flow from springs. In the early hours of the morning, the surface
of the water turns whitish due to the precipitation of some sulfides, which explains the
dairy toponymy of "Agua de leche".
Before reaching the "Agua de leche" spring there is a small "canyon" through which a
gentle waterfall of crystalline water descends, water that in ancient times was bottled
and sold under the name of Santa Julia Mineral Water.
