SERVICE PROCEDURE

ENGINE: CUMMINS CALIBRATION OF VALVES AND VERSION: 01

MOD: N14/QSX/ISX INJECTORS OF HD ENGINES DATE: 06/02/08
(COMPETITION N°44) PAGE: 1 of 4
ENGINES SERVICE AREA: WORKSHOP

1. Objective: Establishes the procedure for calibrating engine valves, the appropriate use to perform
valve calibrations carried out by engine service technicians.
2. Scope: Competence corresponding to technicians and higher categories in the application of
engines and machinery: Cummins and Komatsu of all models.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Adjustment of valves, injectors, and engine brake should be done
using the values listed in this section.
Adjust engine valves, injectors, and brakes every 400,000 km
[250,000 mi], 6,000 hours, or 2 years (whichever comes first).
Adjustment should be done after any major repair.
Valve, Brake, and Injector Adjustment Values
Injector Adjustment is 8 N•m (70 lb-in.)

Admission valve 0.35 mm (0.014 in.)

Scape valve 0.68 mm (0.027 in.)

Engine Brake 7.00 mm (0.276 in.)

Measurements should be made when
the engine is cold. The coolant temperature must be 60°C(140°F) or
below.
Remove the rocker cover.
Make sure the basic engine timing is set properly before attempting
to measure, adjust, or calibrate the valve train and injectors.
Early engine vibration dampers are marked BRAKE SET 1-6,
BRAKE SET 2-5, or BRAKE SET 3-4. The engine brakes should be
set to the appropriate mark on these engines. Newer engine
vibration dampers are marked only A, B, or C, and fit with the valves
and injector in the same cylinder.
Locate the valve adjustment marks on the outside of the vibration
damper.
The adjustment marks are A, B, and C:
Set mark A to adjust cylinder 1 or 6.
Set mark B to adjust cylinder 2 or 5.
Set mark C to adjust cylinder 3 or 4.
Two full revolutions are required to adjust all valves, engine brakes,
and injectors.

If the engine is equipped with an air compressor:

Remove the oil filler connector from the lower gearbox cover.
Insert a 3/4-inch drive ratchet and extension. on the air compressor
control.
Turn the air compressor knob clockwise as viewed from the front of
the engine.

failure, which can result in serious personal injury or property damage.
Crankshaft rotation is clockwise when viewed from the front of the

The cylinders are numbered from the front of the engine (1-2-3 4-5-6).
The engine firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4.

3
If the engine is not equipped with an air compressor:
Loosen the cap screws and rotate the cap or remove the oil filler
tube, if equipped.
Using a 1½-inch socket, push the swing gear into the gear socket
and turn the swing adapter clockwise to turn the motor.
Rock the swivel device back and forth until it disengages.

Each cylinder has four rocker arms:

• Exhaust valve rocker arm (1)
• Injector rocker arm (2)
• Intake valve rocker arm (3)
• The engine brake rocker arm (4).
The intake valve rocker arm is always the long rocker arm

on the valve rocker shaft.

Valves, brakes, and injectors on the same cylinder are set to the
same indicator mark on the vibration damper.

NOTE : For illustrative purposes, position A is shown as the first step.

It is not necessary to start with position A, as long as the proper
sequence is followed.
Use the compressor knob or turning device to rotate the motor in the
direction of motor rotation, clockwise as viewed from the front of the
motor. Align the A mark on the vibration damper with the indicator on
the gear cover.

Check the valve rockers on the given cylinder to see if both the intake
and exhaust valves are closed.
a ere
Both valve groups are closed when the rocker arms and brake rocker ( OK )
arm are loose. If both sets of valves are not closed, turn the
compressor drive gear one full revolution, and align mark A on the front
shock absorber with the indicator again.

Loosen the locknut on the injector adjusting screw on the cylinder.
Do not use a click type torque wrench. {55
Use a dial-type torque wrench with a range of 0 to 150 in-lbs. to tighten
the injector rocker arm adjusting screw. If the screw vibrates during
adjustment, repair the screw and rocker arm as required.
Back off the adjusting screw one or two turns.
Hold the torque wrench in a position that allows you to look directly at
the dial. This is to ensure that the dial will be read accurately.
Make sure the parts are aligned, and remove the oil from the valve train S- ) M- M—- Bombab
and injectors by tightening the adjusting screw.
Use this initial setting to precharge the valve train and injectors.

Tighten the injector rocker arm adjusting screw.
