History of Medicine Chair
BACKGROUND:
The history of medicine is the branch of history dedicated to the study of medical
knowledge and practices over time. The different stages of the development of medicine
and their personalities worldwide have been collected in different ways.
The medical community in Venezuela, since the beginning of the 19th century, was
concerned with forming a historical memory of the discipline in the territory. At the end of
this same century, a History of Medicine course was included in the Faculty of Medicine
of the Central University of Venezuela, located in Caracas. Half a century later, in 1940,
the chairs of history of medicine were created at the Central University of Venezuela, the
University of Los Andes and at the University of Zulia (LUZ.)
The cumulative vision of the evolution of medicine had the intention from its beginnings
to teach students what their heritage is and who have been the builders of it. It is a
tradition based on the achievements of different doctors, whether in the updated training
of new doctors, the practice of medicine, the introduction of international and national
medical innovations and advances, the commitment to public health and research into
diseases specific to the country.
Countless research derived from the work of these chairs since their inception and,
although irregularly, to date have been captured in black and white as a historical legacy
and reference for new generations.
RATIONALE:
The triumph of the Bolivarian Revolution found a Venezuela with great inequalities in the
health conditions of the population as well as great deterioration of these, derived from
great social inequalities. Its socialist project includes the development of a health system
that aims to ensure primary health care coverage for the entire population. It stumbles
upon the insufficient number of professionals willing to carry out this noble task, the
majority with training more directed towards healing and not towards the prevention of
diseases, forgetting the direct work with the patient in the poorest communities. . This
approach coincided with a highly privatized health system aimed at the individual needs
of a group of patients.
The National Program of Comprehensive Community Medicine then emerges, which
constitutes the design, development and implementation of the most ambitious increase
in the training of doctors for the public service in a single country. This process is based
on a significant paradigmatic change and has been possible due to the political will of the
Venezuelan and Cuban governments.
University extension as an integrative vision of the new university model favors the
comprehensive extracurricular training of health professionals. Within the framework of
the implementation of necessary changes in the development of this conception of
teaching, focused on extracurricular activities that contribute to real learning needs, the
Chair of History of Medicine of Venezuela is created, with the purpose of stimulating
extensive research into the life and work of outstanding scientific and intellectual
