Day of the Dead
What is the meaning of Day
of the Dead?
The Day of the Dead is a Mexican tradition that unites towns and each
person in Mexico and is a celebration that occurs between the first and
second days of November.
Although for many this idea may sound somewhat strange just thinking
about it, according to Jean Chevalier's Dictionary of Symbols, 'Death has, in
fact, several meanings. Liberating from sorrows and worries, it is not an end
in itself; It opens access to the realm of the spirit, to true life: mors janua
vitae (death the door of life). In a dark sense, it symbolizes the profound
change that man undergoes as a result of initiation. The profane must die to
be reborn to the higher life that initiation confers. If he does not die in his
state of imperfection, he is prohibited from all initiatory progress. Life and
death seen from a cosmogonic point are cycles that mark endings and
beginnings, so it is not surprising that in the case of Mexico this is seen as a
party, since it is not goodbye, but a 'see you later' .
What is the meaning of Day
of the Dead?
That is why with great devotion, shortly before the end of October, a large
number of homes in Mexico separate a table or a small piece of furniture to
put an altar of the dead that includes photos of those who have crossed the
threshold of death, and showing them that both in their homes and in their
hearts they continue to be remembered by something that extends to the
first days of November. They put out the traditional bread of the dead,
sweets, chopped paper of different colors, fruits, sugar skulls, water because
it is suspected that it has come a long way, marigold flowers and others in
purple tones known as moco de turkey or manta de candela. If possible, add
what the person liked most in life and of course, candles to light the way;
There are also the finishing touches: the 'china paper' that normally ranges
between orange, purple and black.

What is the meaning

begin on the first day of the first lunar month in the Chinese
calendar and last for 15 days, when the full moon arrives. It is a time
when families usually gather and travel long distances to get home
to see their loved ones. The tradition was threatened two years in a
row by the coronavirus. For many, this is the only opportunity of
the year they have to return home and bring bags of gifts.
As it is celebrated?
A large family reunion dinner is usually held on Lunar New Year's Eve, which this year falls on
February 9.
The menu is carefully chosen to include dishes associated with luck, including fish (the Chinese
word also sounds like “surplus”), puddings (symbolizes advancement), and foods that look like gold
ingots (like dumplings).
In China, the foods served at these classic dinners vary from north to south. For example, northern
Chinese tend to eat dumplings and noodles, while southern Chinese cannot live without steamed
rice.
But no matter what dishes you prefer, Lunar New Year meals are a feast of puns.
Each of the 15 days that make up the celebration has its own traditions. On Chinese New Year's
Eve, for example, families gather to have dinner together.
The tradition of launching fireworks comes from the custom of lighting bamboo stalks to ward off
evil spirits, such as the half-dragon, half-lion monster "Nian", which according to legend comes out
of hiding on the Lunar New Year to attack people .

And the Lunar New Year ends with the Lantern Festival, celebrated at night with parades and
displays of decorated lanterns. The main event of this day is the Dragon Dance: beautiful dragons
made of paper, silk and bamboo are held above the heads and appear to dance during the parade.
