Essay
The influence of social media on our personal lives is immense. While some
believe that everything should be published and shared online, others criticize
social media and prefer to stay offline. Which group do you suppport?

Modern life is already impossible to imagine without the Internet. There are
very few people left who do not have a social network account. Probably, only
very elderly people do not have their own pages on the Internet, because they do
not know how to create them. There are both great benefits and considerable
damage in social networks. With the help of social networks, people can find all
those with whom they have long lost touch. On the Internet, you can communicate
with your friends and relatives, even if they are in another city and in another
country. You can try to find a person who interests you and admit your feelings to
him. Social networks also allow you to observe the lives of your idols. Thus, a
whole world of possibilities opens up to a person: you may read the blogs of your
favorite celebrities, learn what they are thinking and worrying about, and comment
on their music. However, along with all of these benefits, the disadvantages of
social networks emerge, which is why I prefer to remain offline.
Social networks provide me with a lot of information. When social networks
first appeared, platforms became a place of meaningful communication. You
would share videos, photos, and emails with the most important people in your life.
Now that there are millions of people on the platform, due to political disputes,
selfies posted, shared links and videos of brands that get into the regular news feed
every day, it becomes quite difficult for me to get all this information at a glance.
As a result, keeping in touch with individuals becomes challenging for me because
I risk losing our chats in the huge data that social networks have become.
The next reason why I prefer to be offline is due to the issue of privacy. From
my personal experience, I can say that the user agreements that I agreed to follow
when registering allow any platform to use my content without authorship,
including my photos. There are several reasons why I care so much about the issue
of privacy, such as you can become a target if you share your current location on
social networks. Your employer may fire you if they disagree with something you
have shared on your network. If you share too much with the public, problems may
arise that will never be resolved as the information spreads. This all leads to the
fact that there is so much data exchange in the modern social network and the level
of privacy that a person has is gradually decreasing every day.
When using the Internet for a long time, I noticed that I was replacing offline
interactions with my online relationships. My constant internet connections with
other people are changing my approach to relationships. I can open a friend's social
profile with a simple tap or click. Then I can send a message to this person, leave a
comment or like one of his posts. I often began to replace these actions with face-
to-face conversations that I had before, which reduces the number of social skills
that I can use outside of the digital sphere. I can say that my activity leads more to
antisocial behavior because of this drawback.
Social media can become a serious distraction for me. When information
available on social media distracts me, it can take up to 25 minutes for me to return
to my original task. The time spent on social platforms, as well as the time needed
to recover from distractions, can worsen my productivity. There are several ways I
can limit this disadvantage. Before work, I always start by turning off notifications
on my phone and in the browser. Then I set apart a certain time during the day
when I can check my profile and news feed, instead of going there several times a
day.
The most important reason why I prefer to stay offline is that students who
use social networks too often have lower grades. Students who are on social
networks while studying or doing homework cannot be productive from the point
of view of education. This activity reduces the quality of their work, which often
leads to lower grades. At my university, I noticed that the average score of those
who do not use social networks is about 3.82 and they all have access to writing a
diploma, while those who continued to use social networks had an average score of
less than 3.5. Students who use social networking sites during their studies score
lower in their tests compared to those who do not use them. I believe that four
hours of screen time is enough for a student to get a normal grade.
Finally, the last thing that keeps me from using social media is my reliance on
them, which is widely regarded as one of the most frequently expressed
disadvantages of social media platforms. My observations show that, because of
the additional free time that many people had during the COVID-19 outbreak,
there was a greater reliance on social media. People who use social networks
excessively develop psychological dependence on them. People who use social
networks excessively are often cut off from society and the natural world. This can
cause significant dissociation from what is happening in a person's real life. Most
people use social networks so often that they become addicted to them. They
constantly review their news feeds and contribute to them. Dependence on social
networks has affected the majority of teenagers. People were cut off from society
and the natural world when social networks appeared. They did not want to see
what was happening in the real world around them.
At the end of my essay, I want to say that social networks give us the
opportunity to quickly spread important information among the public. This helps
us stay in touch with each other, learn about current events and share the good
things in our lives. However, we must not forget that this can also lead to social
isolation. That is why we have to make healthy choices when using this
technology. Social networks can be used for good as easily as to the disadvantage
of others. The use of social media should be moderate and used wisely. Simply
put, social media is both a blessing and a curse. It depends on our past behavior.
Use them to your advantage and do not let them rule your life.
