(c) Write down a comparative difference between the types of solids based on band theory with
examples.

type.
(e) Narrate a comparative difference between the three distribution function (Maxwell
Boltzmann, Fermi-Dirac and Bose-Einstein).

3 (a) Elaborately discuss band theory in solid. Briefly describe about conductors, semiconductors
and insulators based on band theory with examples.
(b) What is X-ray diffraction? Why X-ray is used for the determination of crystal system? Derive
Bragg’s law of X-ray diffraction. The Bragg’s angle for (2 2 0) reflection from nickel crystal
is 38.20, when first order X-ray of wave length 1.54A0 are employed in a diffraction experiment.
Determine the lattice constant of nickel.

characteristics of output laser beam from He-Ne laser?
(b) What do you mean by electrostatics? State Gauss law in electrostatics in a medium. Derive its
differential form. Using this derive Coulomb’s law and hence write down the limitations of Gauss’s law.

(b) Find the Compton shift for X-rays of wave length 1.5 Å, scattered by 600. What is the wave
length of scattered X-ray?
(c) What are the differences between pair production and pair annihilation?
(d) What do you mean by matter wave? Mention the De- Broglie wave length for a matter wave.
(e) What do mean by threshold frequency?
(f) If the uncertainty in the position of a proton is 5×10-10 m. Calculate the uncertainty in its
momentum.
(g) Write Schrodinger’s time independent equation for a free particle moving along X-axis.
(h) Explain quantum mechanical tunneling with a suitable example.
(i) Define the uncertainty principle and mathematical form of energy time uncertainty principle.
(j) What do you mean by probability density?
(k) Write down the de-Broglie hypothesis of the matter waves .

(c)What is photo electric effect? Discuss its experimental arrangement and experimental observation
of the photo electric effect.
