Exam consists of SIX problems in TWO pages. Total Marks: 40 Marks 1/50

Answer the following questions (g=9.8 m/s2)

Question 1 [6 Marks]

The cylindrical plate is held in equilibrium by

the three cables shown which are concurrent at
point D. Express each force which the cables
exert on the plate as a Cartesian vector (3
Marks) and determine the magnitude and
coordinate direction angles of the resultant
force. (3 Marks)

Question 2 [6 Marks]
If FA= 40 kN and FB= 30 kN, determine the
magnitude of the resultant force (2 Marks) and
specify the location of its point of application (x, z)
on the slab (4 Marks)

Question 3 [6 Marks]
Determine the tension in each cable (AC and
AB) (4 Marks) and the components of
reaction at the ball-and-socket support at D
(2 Marks)

Question 4 [6 Marks]
For the truss shown in the figure:
i) Determine the zero-force members
(1.5 Marks)
ii) Determine the reactions at hinge A
and roller E. (1.5 Marks)
iii) Determine the force in each
member of the truss and state
whether each member is in tension
or compression. (3 Marks)

Question 5 [7 Marks]
Determine the components of
reactions at the roller support A,
the hinge support E and the
internal pins (hinges) B, C and D.

Question 6 (a) [3 Marks]

The coefficients of friction between the block and
the rail are: ߤ௦ = 0.3 and ߤ௞ = 0.25. Knowing that
ߠ = 65o, determine the smallest value of P required
for the block to start moving up the rail.

Question 6 (b) [6 Marks]

In the shown lamina, if ρ1 = 2 kg/m2
and ρ2 = 4
2
kg/m find the lamina’s centroid (3 Marks) and
the lamina’s center of mass (3 Marks).
(Dimensions are in m)
