2. Introduction
The purpose of this document is to provide instructions to MVNO’s on how to con gure
key iOS settings and features in “Unknown bundles”. MVNO’s are not allowed to share
this document and other reference documents speci ed here with their subscribers,
instead MVNO’s should update their portals to keep their subscribers updated with these
setup instructions.
Carriers (and subscribers of such carriers, including MVNO’s) who do not have legal
contract with Apple including a “Carrier speci c bundle” i.e., speci c pre-de ned carrier
settings mutually developed through considerable network con guration and testing
efforts, can use the so called “Unknown bundle” which may require certain services to be
manually con gured (Data, PHS, MMS etc…)
Below are the key settings/features which can be con gured in “Unknown bundle”. This
document explains how to modify these settings for an “unknown bundle”.
- Mobile/Cellular Data
- Personal hotspot
- MMS
- 5G NSA
- VoLTE
- VoWiFi (Wi-Fi Calling)
Below is the list of other key features which cannot be con gured in “Unknown bundle”:

Mobile/Cellular Data:
Data connectivity over cellular shall not function unless certain parameters like Access Point
Name (APN), Username/Password (if required by MVNO) are con gured as shown in below
screenshot in iOS Settings > Mobile Data > Mobile Data
If incorrect APN settings are entered, then subscribers shall lose cellular-data connectivity.
Please note that updating iOS software resets any changes made to APN settings. If APN
settings are edited before updating iOS, settings will reset to the default values. Subscribers
might need to re-enter your settings after an iOS update. However if con guration pro le is
used to modify APN settings for cellular data, those settings will remain after iOS upgrade.
Below section shall provide more details about con guration pro le.
There is an alternative way to con gure the settings by installing a pro le which avoids the
need to manually enter the APN details. However this is limited to “Mobile/Cellular Data”
functionality only and does not allow to pre-de ne APN for other features. Below you can
nd more details on how to con gure the pro le and install it on iOS devices.
Apple Con gurator 2 is a utility (downloadable from App Store and is compatible on Mac
OS only) which allows to manage settings on iOS devices and con guring “Mobile Data”

APN is one of the available option. Using this tool, a new pro le can be created with and
Mobile Data APN & IP versions can be con gured as shown in below screenshots.
Once the pro le is con gured, it need to be installed on iOS device successfully and device
need to be rebooted. One approach could be for MVNO Europe to create pro les for
various MVNO’s with different partners MNO APN details and save them in the web portal
and allow users to install it from the portal.
For other features like PHS, MMS and VVM - as they are not con gured using the Apple
Con gurator 2, we would suggest to update any web portal with the APN and username/
password details for these features for all of your members so that MVNO subscribers are
aware of how to use those features when camped on speci c MNO in that country.

If MVNO uses different APN, Username and Password to support Personal hotspot than
the one used to con gure “Mobile Data”, those settings can be con gured in:

5G Non-standalone (NSA):
From iOS 16.4 onwards, Apple has enabled 5G NSA in “Unknown bundle” for iPhone
models 12 and above.
By default 5G NSA is disabled in the “Unknown bundle” (as shown in below gure 6).
If user want to enable 5G, they need to manually select either “5G Auto” or “5G On”. Footer
text is shown to explain what 5G Auto and 5G On actually mean along with additional note
that 5G may impact reliability of some voice calls and data if Apple recommended network
parameters are not con gured.

from iPhone 10 and above.
By default VoLTE is disabled in the “Unknown bundle” (as shown in below gure 7).
If user want to enable VoLTE, they need to manually enable “VoLTE” switch. Footer text is
shown to explain about VoLTE switch and how it may impact battery life, some voice calls

From iOS 17.0 onwards, Apple has enabled Wi-Fi Calling in “Unknown bundle” for all
iPhones compatible with iOS 17.0.
By default Wi-Fi calling is disabled in the “Unknown bundle” (as shown in Figure 8).
If user want to enable Wi-Fi calling, then a pop-up will be displayed (as shown in Figure 9)
and if user agrees, then Wi-Fi Calling will be enabled provided if MVNO supports our default
con guration settings.
Kindly refer to “Wi-Fi Calling for all - Technical Paper” document for more information
on the default settings supported in “Unknown bundle” so MVNO’s can con gure their
network accordingly.

eSIM installation on iPhone is supported by default in “Unknown bundle”. One easier way
to install eSIM on iPhone is using a QR code provided by the carrier. When user scans the
QR code, iPhone attempts to download the eSIM pro le from the SMDP+ proxy server that
is con gured by the MNO/MVNO.
Please refer to “Apple eSIM Lite WP 2.0.3.pdf” document for more details on our eUICC,
SMDP+, eSIM pro le and other related con guration requirements.
Kindly note that eSIM installation on Watch does not work using QR code, it need to be
enabled in the “Carrier bundle”.
