THE NOBLE QUR’AN

The noble Qur’an is the word of Allah who is the creator of the whole universe. Allah revealed the
noble Qur’an onto Mohammed (PBUH) via Gabriel (Arch Angel) and ‘all’ the words and
statements in this book are revealed from Allah. Allah has guaranteed that those who follow this
book shall be successful here in this world, and be rewarded in the world hereafter.

The most important aspects regarding the Holy Book Qur’an to firmly understand and believe are
that:

1. This book is not a theology book. It is the book of laws, principles and a systematic code of
conduct

2. The book invites people to think before they act

3. The Holy Qur’an is not a book of an ideology or themes

4. It presents a complete system, code of conduct, and practical solutions for the whole of
mankind.

5. The Holy Book Qur’an contains the revelations from Allah to Mohammed, the last prophet
(PBUH). In fact, His revelations are contained only in the Qur’an

Several books have been written by believers, and non-believers, which attempt to explain the
meaning of the Qur’an. For many years a number of scholars (Muslim and non-Muslim),
intellectuals and philosophers have written books to understand its meanings, which has resulted
in an overwhelming collection of translations (tafaseer). We have to study the noble Qur’an,
which explains its meanings itself, so that our belief (Iman) can be completed.

Allah (SWT) says in the Qur’an, in Surah 2, verse 2:

This is the book (The Qur’an) in which there is no doubt, a guidance to those who are Al-
Muttaqun [the pious believers of Islamic monotheism who fear Allah much (abstrain from all kinds
of sins and evil deeds which Allah has forbidden) and love Allah much (perform all kinds of good
deeds which Allah has ordained)].
Surah As-Sajdah (32), verse 2:

The revelation of the book (this Qur’an) in which there is no doubt is from the lord of all the worlds
the Aa’lamin.

Surah Ale-Imran (3), verse 3:

It is Allah who has revealed the book (the Qur’an) to you (Mohammad PBUH) with truth,
confirming what came before it, and Allah revealed the Taura’t (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel).

Surah Baqrah (2), verse 176:

That is because Allah (SWT) has revealed the book (The Qur’an) with the truth and those who
seek causes of dispute in the book are verily far away in opposition.

Surah Baqrah (2), verse 121:

Those to whom we have given the book (The Qur’an) recite it as it ought to be recited - it is they
who believe in it; and who so disbelieve in it, it is they who are the losers.

In other words, those who study the Qur’an and understand it accept the truth sent by Allah.

In Surah Al-Nisa (4), verse 105, Allah (SWT) says:

Surely it is We who have revealed to you the book with truth, in order that you may judge
between the people in accordance with that which Allah has shown you. And do not plead with
Allah on behalf of the deceivers.

It is now clear and well established from the above references that the Qur’an is the book
revealed from Allah to the last prophet Mohammad (PBUH). The book contains only the truth and
facts, there is no doubt in it, and it contains no false statements or fiction.

In Surah Al-Hijr (15), verse 1, it is said:

ALIF-LAM-RA – These are verses of the book, and a Qur’an that contains clear and true
explanations.

The Qur’an clearly explains its meaning with logic and common sense. There is no other book in
the world which qualifies as a ‘Divine’ book.

One meaning of ‘Kitab-e-Mo-Been’ is that it explains clearly its principles, orders and laws. The
second meaning is that the Book explains distinctly what is right and wrong. The third meaning of
‘Kitab-e-Mo-Been’ is that it is a divine book. If you read it with an open mind you will conclude
that it could not have been written by the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), but was clearly revealed
by Allah (SWT).

Allah (SWT) describes in Surah Namal (27), verse 1:

These are the verses of the Qur’an that contains clear and true explanations.

Surah Al-Nahal (16), verse 89:

And we have revealed to you this Book explaining in detail everything, and it is a guidance and a
mercy from end to end as well as glad tiding for those who have submitted themselves (to Allah
as Muslims).

Allah has laid out everything clearly in the Qur’an; the rules and regulations, and even methods of
political, social, economic and family life. All details are clearly described in the Qur’an.
In Surah Al-Anaam (6), verse 114:

Allah advised Mohammad (PBUH) to tell the people, “Shall I then seek a judge other than Allah,
whereas it is Allah who has revealed to you the book fully explained. And those to whom we
have given the book know that this Qur’an has been revealed to you from your Lord in truth. So
(o’ listener!) never be then of the doubters.

Surah Fussilat (41) (this is also known as Surah Ha-Mim, As-Sajdah), verses 41 and 42:

Surely those who disbelieved in the Reminder (the Qur’an) when it came to them shall receive the
punishment. And surely it is an honourable well-fortified, respected Book because it is Allah’s
speech and Allah has protected it from corruption (see Surah 15, verse 9 below).

Allah has guaranteed that falsehood cannot come to it from before it or behind it because it is
revealed by the All wise, worthy of all praise (Allah-Uzzojul)

A NOTE: It is nearly fifteen hundred years now sincehe Qur’an was revealed by Allah. Since then
people who disbelieve have been challenging and striving constantly to make changes (additions
or subtractions) in the Noble Qur’an. They have failed to do so because Allah has confirmed in
his book, the Qur’an, that no one can do that.

Surah- Al Hajr (15), verse 9 confirms:

Surely, we, it is we who have revealed the Dhikr (i.e. the Qur’an) and surely, we will guard and
protect it (from corruption).

So far we have learnt that the Qur’an is complete, a final word, fully explained, protected and
guarded by Allah.

In Surah 5 Al Ma’idah Verse 3, Allah has confirmed:

This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed my favour upon you and have chosen
for you Islam as your religion.

In other words, being a ‘perfected’ religion, it is a complete system of life with practical methods
and procedures. It gives complete and full guidance for cultural, social, political and family life.
This system is applicable even in the present day, and will be in the future as well.

We must understand one more aspect from the above Surah, which is that Allah (SWT) has
referred to only His book (the Qur’an) as the ‘Deen’. Allah (SWT) has given instructions to
Mohammed (PBUH) in several placed in the Qur’an. Mohammed (PBUH) represented these
instructions in practice during his life, and became a role model so that people would not find
difficulty in following Islam.

Allah advised us in Surah Al-Ahzab (33) Verse 21:

Surely you have an excellent practical example for your guidance in the (life of) the Prophet,
Mohammed (S.A.W.). An example for him who has hope in the Meeting with Allah and the
coming of the Last Day, and (he) remembers Allah in abundance.

The above is a good example because he (Mohammed PBUH.) followed in his life whatever was
revealed to him.

In Surah Al-Ahzab (33), verse 2 Allah instructed him:

(you) Keep following that which is revealed to you from your Lord. Surely Allah is fully aware of
what you do.

Allah also explains in Surah Al-Anam (6), verse 19:

That this Qur’an has been revealed to me so that I may warn you with it and (warn) all these with
whomsoever it may reach.

Then Mohammed (PBUH) was instructed to declare:

I follow only what has been revealed (by Allah) to me.

The same has also been ordered for all Believers in Surah Al-A’raaf (7), verse 3:

(O People) follow what has been revealed unto you from your Lord (in the Qur’an) and follow not
any Auliya (protectors and helpers who order you to associate partners in worship with Allah).

One of the most important qualities of the Qur’an is that it itself gives explanations of its verses,
and answers to all our problems.

In Surah Al-Furqan (25), verses 32 and 33:

It has been revealed in parts so that We may strengthen your heart thereby, and We have
rehearsed it to tee in slow, well arranged stages, gradually. And no question do they bring to
thee but We reveal to thee the truth and the best explanation.
It is a fact that to explain the correct meaning of a book someone must be more knowledgeable or
learned, or at least equivalent to the writer of the book. The Noble Qur’an is a book revealed by
Allah; and therefore, no human being at any stage or time can be superior or equal to Allah to be
able to explain fully its contents. That is why Allah advised us that He is to explain the meaning
of the Qur’an 25/33.

Therefore, Allah has said repeatedly, like in Surah Younis (10), verse 24:

This we explain and expose the meaning of Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs,
revelation, laws, etc.) in detail for the people who are thoughtful and have reflection.

In Surah Al-An’am (6), verse 98:

We have explained the Qur’an in detail. Our revelations (This Qur’an) for the people who
understand (the reality).

At the same time Allah has made it compulsory for us to understand the real meaning of the
Qur’an, and warned in Surah Mohammed (47), verse 24:

Do they not then think deeply in the Qur’an or are their hearts locked up (from understanding it)?

This means that people should not blindly follow traditions and customs, but study the Qur’an with
a view to understanding it.

Further, Allah (SWT) instructed in Surah So’add (38), verse 29:

This is the Book that we have revealed to you, blessed, so that they may ponder over its
revelation and that the men of wisdom may be admonished.

Having understood these verses, one question that arises is, ‘How can we understand the
meaning and guidance of these verses?’
The Qur’an replies and answers these questions itself in its own language so that people would
think deeply and understand these verses.

Allah described in Surah Al-An’am (6), verse 46:

We explain the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelation, laws, etc.) yet they
turn away (from the truth) unheeding.

In the same Surah (6), verse 65 we read:

See how variously we explain the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelation,
laws, etc.) so that they may understand the reality.

In Surah Hud (11), verse 1 Allah says:

Alif-Lam-Ra, this is a glorious Book, the verses whereof are perfected (in ever sphere of
knowledge), and then explained in detail from One (Allah) who is all-wise, well acquainted (with
all things).

Therefore, if we read the Qur’an with a view to understanding it, we will find that Allah has fully
explained the Book so that we can implement Qur’anic laws in our life.

In Surah Younis (12), verses 1 & 2, it is stated:

Alif-Laam-Raa. These are the verses of the Book Luminous. Verily we! We have revealed as an
Arabic Qur’an, so that you may clearly understand.

In Surah Al-Qamar (54), verse 17 Allah says:

And we have indeed made the Qur’an easy to understand and remember, then is there anyone
who will remember (or receive) admonition?

Having read all these verses we must not suspect that the Qur’an is a difficult and complicated
Book. The Book is easy to understand as long as it is studied properly.

If we do not follow The Qur’an as our code of law and regulations but follow and practice
traditions and rituals, and narrative Books, how can we claim, in front of Allah on judgement day,
that we are Muslim and pious (Momin)?

Allah directed in clear, plain and simple words, in Surah Bani-Israel (17), verse 9):

It is a fact that the Qur’an leads you to the correct and right path.
SUMMARY

1. The Qur’an is a revelation to the last prophet Mohammad (PBUH), and the revelations to the
Prophet are only present in the Qur’an.

2. The Qur’an is a true book in which there is no doubt.

3. The purpose of the Qur’an is ‘guidance’ (2:185)

4. The Qur’an is a complete book which gives complete guidance on the way of life, including on
economic, social, personal and family matters.

5. No one can make any amendments to the Qur’an because Allah has taken the responsibility
for His scripture.

6. In relation to Tafaseer (explanation) of the Qur’an, Allah has stated in several verses that in
order to understand the real meaning of the Qur’an, no other book is required. The Qur’an
itself is Tafaseer of its own verses.

7. Allah has revealed the Qur’an in simple and easy Arabic so that one should study the Qur’an
attentively and then find how easy it is to understand.

8. Allah has invited us repeatedly to study the Qur’an with a view to understanding it. However,
we ignore Allah’s order – and recite the Qur’an without understanding it. We do not read any
other book without understanding it. How awful, to think that we set aside Allah’s invitation
and we recite the Qur’an without understanding it.

9. Finally, in the Qur’an Allah warns people who do not study the Qur’an with an understanding
of it, that they will be liable for punishment on the day of judgement.

In Surah Al-Furq’an (25), verse 30, it is stated:

The prophet will say to Allah on the day of judgment that the people who read the Qur’an without
understanding it do not deserve your forgiveness. Therefore, everyone should avoid committing
this sin. It is our duty to convey the above message to others, particularly to those who claim to
be Muslims but do not study the Qur’an as instructed by Allah (SWT).
