LOAD AND HAUL SUPERINTENDENT

JOB DESCRIPTION
Lumwana Mining Company is seeking to recruit a highly committed
employee for the position of Superintendent Load and Haul to join
the versatile Mining team.

Reporting to the Production Manager you will be responsible


for Implementation of mine plan, mine ore on surface and ensuring
that Coordinators and Shift Supervisors are supported / advised in
the highest operating standards of LMC open pit mining operation.

Your duties will include but not limited to the following:

 Operate and control mining equipment to optimize production


flows.
 Operate the facilities to produce and dispatch ore of the
required quality, in a safe environment.
 Monitor and control appropriate quality standards- dilution,
ore loss, geotechnical, mill feed, operating level, pit and dump
design.
 Dispatch daily mine production fleet including ancillary
equipment as per 24-hour mine plan.
 Take responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of all
personnel including contractors working within the mining
area.
 Manage, coordinate and complete all works for any such
contractors in the mine area.
 Develop continuous improvement strategies and communicate
and apply accordingly.
 Monitor availability and utilization of the load and haul
equipment.
 Assisting in the development and submission of the
operational budgets.
 Carry out any other adhoc production related requests as
necessary.
 Maintain and enforce crew discipline.
 Drive the J20 initiative and the Barrick DNA culture.
 Develop, implement and maintain safe work procedures and
promote high safety and health awareness.
To be considered for the position, you must meet the following
requirements.

 Degree in Mining Engineering


 Eight years’ Experience (8years) in the open pit mining
industry
 Experience in large multi pit operations utilizing large scale
mining equipment i.e Face shovels, drill rigs and blasting
experience essential.
 Must have sound Knowledge of safe working procedures and
mine operations.
 Good computer skills with the ability to use integrated
management systems, word processing, presentation and
spreadsheet applications.
 Previous experience in a similar role will be an added
advantage.
 Member of Engineering Institution of Zambia
 Ability to analyze, interpret, and present mine-specific
production data.

B. Mining Engineer - Production


Job description:

Purpose of the Role:

This role entails control and management of contractor mining activities that
are critical to the nickel production. The Production Engineer shall also
highlight deviations from the mine plans and hold respective personnel
accountable.

As part of the compliance to the plan, the Production Engineer shall ensure
that mining and ore haulage to the crusher targets are met and appropriate
personnel are notified if there is a risk of not attaining the planned targets. The
role supports Mining Contractors, Enterprise technical and operations and
Process Plant.

Specific Job Responsibilities:

The incumbent will be required to adhere to all relevant requirements, policies,


procedures and legal regulations pertaining to health, safety, environment and
quality, as well as finance, human resources, and any other regulations as
required by the company and relevant to the level of the role and
responsibilities of the function.

 Develop detailed mining projects designs, schedules and monitor execution


of the works. Mining project such as; haul roads, ramps, construction pads,
embankments, drainages and silt traps are some of the key areas of focus.
 Liaising with the geology team to ensure consistency and adequacy of ore
feed to the crushers for the shift/day.
 When changes occur, either to a crusher(s) or feed source(s), the Production
Engineer shall make immediate changes necessary to alleviate/mitigate
such change(s) to ensure efficient delivery of material to ROM.
 Coordinate with Plant and ROM Pad personnel in order to incorporate
crusher maintenance schedule and digger availabilities in the daily mine
plan.
 Assist the Mining Superintendent and mining contractors' operations team,
in identifying and highlighting non-compliance to mine plans and/or
planned feed grade deviations where feasible.
 Ensure diggers are mining in locations in accordance to the mine plan and
are trucked up appropriately; systematically highlight any deviations to the
plan.
 Ensure quality controls are enforced in both drilling, blasting and load,
haul, dump operations in addition to safety.
 Coordinate issue resolution within the shift among Process Plant,
Production, Planning, Survey teams at the soonest acceptable timeframes.
 Validate mining locations for contractors before they commence mining
operations with communication to dispatch on any remediation plan.
 Assess, propose and implement through the contractor's improvements in
the Mining operations leading to better safety, quality and performance of
production.
 Any other task as requested by the Mining Superintendent or Mine
Operations Manager.

Qualifications & Experience:

 Full grade 12 Certificate.


 B.Sc. in Mining Engineering.
 Valid driver's licence essential.
 Valid Zambian Blasting Licence.
 Five (5) years' experience in open pit Mining.

Knowledge & Skills:

 Strong Communication Skills: The incumbent will need to liaise with


various internal teams and external contractors. Clear, effective
communication is essential to ensure all parties understand the plans,
changes, and any deviations from the plan.
 Proactive Problem-Solving: Given the nature of mining projects, unexpected
issues are likely to occur. The ability to think on one's feet, assess
situations quickly and accurately, and develop effective solutions is crucial.
 Detail-oriented: Given the nature of the job, paying attention to details is
crucial. Mistakes in mining project designs, schedules, and execution could
lead to costly and potentially dangerous errors.
 Leadership: The incumbent will be tasked with coordinating multiple teams
and contractors and resolving issues. This role requires a strong leader who
can motivate, guide, and influence others.
 Resilience: Mining operations often encounter unexpected challenges and
setbacks. The ability to remain resilient, composed, and positive in the face
of adversity is essential.
 Adaptability: Changes may often occur in this role, whether related to
crusher or feed sources, personnel, or other factors. The incumbent should
be adaptable and able to quickly respond to such changes.
 Safety Consciousness: Adherence to health, safety, environment and quality
regulations is of utmost importance in this role. The incumbent should
have a proactive approach to identifying and mitigating potential safety
hazards.
 Analytical Skills: The incumbent would be required to analyse mining
locations, operations and processes, and implement improvements. A good
understanding of analytical tools and methodologies would be beneficial.
 Time Management: This role involves coordinating different tasks and
managing the overall project timeline. Being able to prioritize tasks and
manage time effectively is crucial.
 Teamwork Orientation: The incumbent would need to work closely with
multiple teams and external contractors. The ability to work effectively as
part of a team, foster a positive team environment, and build strong
relationships is important.
 Integrity: Given the incumbent's involvement in upholding company policies
and legal regulations, a high degree of honesty and integrity is necessary.

C. Engineer, Mine Blasting


Job description:

Key Responsibilities

This position will be required to adhere to all relevant


requirements, policies, procedures and legal regulations
pertaining to health, safety, environment and quality, as well
as finance, human resources, and any other regulations as
required by the company and relevant to the level of the role
and responsibilities of the function.

 Design, plan, monitor and report on all Drill & Blast activities to
ensure productive and efficient mining operations.
 Produce accurate Drill & Blast designs in a timely manner, as
defined by the 3 monthly and weekly plans.
 Under the direction of the Senior Drill Blast Engineer undertake
Drill and Blast related project studies and investigations,
monitoring, wall control blasting trials, electronic initiation
designs, mine to mill analysis, and other related projects.
 Introduce innovative D&B Engineering techniques and products
for continuous improvement.
 Be able to verify, analyse, and report blast performance data.
 Liaise with other departments on deliverables, inputs and
stakeholder needs
 Compliance /Quality Control.
 Champion operational quality control. Ensure holes are drilled to
engineering planned depth, location and inclination desired blast
results.
 Prepare, monitor, update production data associated with
drilling and blasting activities.
 Review Q/A data, digging rates and blast videos to determine
areas of further improvement.
 Ensure Blast Masters Plans for the 3month forecast are
produces in a timely manner.
 Review and analyse contractor shot reports identifying trends
and inefficiencies.
 Consult and develop a close working relationship with the
geotechnical Engineer in order to optimise pit wall stability.
 Develop a sense of continuous improvement, seek to streamline
drill and blast process to increase productivity, quality and
compliance.

Qualifications

 B.Sc. in Mining Engineering

Experience

 Minimum of 10 years' experience open pit mining in a Drill and


Blast capacity

D. Pit Optimization Engineer


Purpose of the role:

The pit optimization engineer is responsible for a wide range of operational tasks
including performance reviews, reporting and improvement projects across mining
and maintenance departments. The engineer should be ready to constantly monitor
operation efficiencies and work with all departments to optimize the production
process through projects and initiatives.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

 Work with the optimization team to develop, implement and monitor business
improvements.
 Actively seek to develop new ideas and initiatives that have the potential to
provide the company with efficiency, cost reduction and productivity
opportunities.
 Support technical, production, safety, training, services, commercial and
maintenance teams with reporting and projects.
 Develop and maintain safe and effective work practices and procedures
throughout.
 Any other tasks as may be delegated upon by the supervisor.

Qualifications & Experience

 A minimum of a Grade Twelve (Grade 12) Certificate


 Bachelor's Degree in Mining Engineering
 At least 3 years' mining related experience.
 Prior Pit Planning Experience

 Familiar with SQL, data management and reporting.
 Competent with basic Surpac or similar CAD Application
