UNIT 14: WE WERE FISHING


PERIOD 1 – WORDS + GRAMMAR 1
I/ Objectives:
- To identify words for family members.
- To understand a short story
- To learn the past continuous and how to use it in questions, sentences and short answers.
II/ Procedures: ( 90 mins )

Part Teacher's activities


- Greeting
- Activity: Guess the word
 T divides Ss into 2 teams
 Write words that ss have just studied on the board, showing only the first two
1/ Warm-up letters and the number of missing letters, e.g. fr__(frog).
(5’)  A child from Team A chooses a word and tries to guess the correct answer. If
he/she gets the correct answer, complete the word on the board and give the team
a point. If the child guesses incorrectly, Team B gets a point.
 The winner of the game is the team with the most points.
Lead-in
2/ Vocabulary - Have ss tell about their family members.
(25’) - Ask ss to tell what they see in the pictures (a family tree). Call some ss to explain
what a family tree is.
Presentation:
- T introduces that ss are going to learn about words for family members.
- Elicit new words by holding the flashcards and ask “Who know this word?”
- Calls some ss to try reading and explaining the words
- T corrects as necessary and model the words that ss don’t know.
Practice
Controlled activities
Listen, point and repeat.
- Ask Ss to open their class books and look at the words
- Play the recording for Ss to listen and point to the words.
- Play the recording again for ss to repeat the words
- Ask individual Ss to say the words for the class
Guided activities
- Activity 1: What’s missing:
 Display the flashcards from the vocabulary set on the board. Point to each one in
turn for ss to say the words. Give the class a few seconds to look at them.
 Ask ss to turn around. Remove a card.
 Display the cards again and ask What's missing?
 When ss have identified the missing card, shuffle the cards again and repeat the
procedure.
- Activity 2: Check memory:

 Show the family tree from Exercise 1 but without the words on a slide.
 Elicit the family members and ask a student to come and write the words in the
correct places.
Pre- teach a story
Lead in
3/ Story (25’) - T asks ss:
 “Do you have any family member living in foreign countries or other cities?”
 “Do they usually visit you? When?”
 “What do you usually do together when you meet?”
 “How do you feel when they leave?”
- T calls some individuals to answer.
- Ask ss to look at 4 pictures and tell what they can see (who, what they are doing,
their feelings)
- Ask ss to predict what the story is about.
Teach the story
- T plays the recording and ss follow
- T plays the recording again and pauses after each sentence for ss to listen and
repeat.
- T asks ss to find the words from Ex1 in the story
- T has ss work in pairs to practice the dialogue
- Invite pairs to read the story in front of the class
Act out the story.
- T and the class decide on the actions for the story
- T plays the recording for ss to listen and practice the actions
- Ss work in pairs to act out the story
- T calls some pairs to act in front of the class
Post teach
Check understanding:
Activity: Comprehension questions:
 Who was crying?
 Why was Holly sad?
 What did Aunt do to make Holly happy?
 What were they doing in the photos?
 Will Holly visit them again?
Break Time (5’)

Presentation:
4/ Grammar - Have Ss focus on the picture and the example sentences in the grammar boxes.
(25’) Show the sentences on the screen.
- Ask ss to identify the past continuous questions, affirmative sentences, negative
sentences, and short answers. Ask them how the past continuous is formed.
- Read the rule aloud to the class. Give ss a minute to study the rule silently. Ask
them to give you sentences containing past continuous verbs.
- Write correct sentences on the board for the class to repeat.
Practice:

- T explains Ex3 and the model. Ss have to write past continuous verbs to complete

the sentences.
- Ask students to do Ex3 individually.
- Call individuals to write answers on board
Guided activities:
Ask and answer
- Ss look at the picture in the textbook and tell what people were doing.
- T calls 2 ss to read the speech bubbles.
- Ss work in pairs to practice speaking.
- T calls pairs to speak in front of the class.
Further activity
- Write the times on the board, e.g. 7.00, 9.30, 2.15, 5.30. Point to 7.00 on the board
and say Yesterday, I was having breakfast at seven o'clock.
- Ask a student What were you doing? Elicit an answer and help if necessary.
- Ss take turns to ask and answer questions using the past continuous and the times
on the board.

5/ Wrap-up - Remind ss about what they’ve learned in the lessons
