Technical information should always be available to the foremen and mechanics, because their
careful and constant adherence to the instructions is essential to ensure vehicle road-worthiness and
safety. In addition, the normal basic safety precautions for working on motor vehicles must, as a
matter of course, be observed.

1.2 Function
The Climatronic control unit -J255- receives information from
electrical and electronic components (information transmitters).
This information is processed in the Climatronic control unit -
J255- in accordance with specifications. The output signals of the
Climatronic control unit -J255- then control the electrical compo‐
nents (final controls).
The Climatronic control unit -J255- is located behind the control
and display unit for Climatronic air conditioning -E87- . The two
components are a single part which cannot be dismantled. So that
the problem source can be quickly found when a component fails
or there is an open circuit, the Climatronic control unit -J255- is
equipped with a fault memory which can be read using the vehicle
diagnosis, testing and information system -VAS 5051A- or the
vehicle diagnosis and service information system -VAS 5052- .
Should a fault be detected in one of the monitored sensors or
components, it is stored in the fault memory.
If a fault having a permanent effect on the operation of the Cli‐
matronic is stored to memory, the display of the operating and
display unit for Climatronic air conditioning -E87- on Climatronic
control unit -J255- flashes for approx. 15 seconds when the igni‐
tion is switched on. In the case of all faults, the Climatronic control
unit -J255- can continue operation at the selected settings in
emergency mode.
Self-diagnosis must be initiated at the beginning of the fault find‐
ing process and the stored information read using the vehicle
diagnosis, testing and information system -VAS 5051A- or vehicle
diagnosis and service information system -VAS 5052- .
The fault information displayed guide one via a fault table with
notes on the possible causes to appropriate repair measures.

– Remove water drain valve -2- from bulkhead -4-.
Check water drain valve as follows to ensure that it functions cor‐
rectly:
♦ The water drain valve must not be stuck together.
♦ The heat insulation mat must not be deformed or damaged in
the area around the water drain valve.
♦ The opening of the water drain valve flap must point down‐
ward.
Note
