PAST TENSE

1. Penggunaan Simple Past Tense

1. Menjelaskan kejadian di masa lampau dalam waktu yang pasti.
Contoh:
 I ate oatmeal this morning.
 She met her mother last night.
 My brother didn’t answer my call that day.
2. Menjelaskan kejadian di masa lampau dan telah selesai saat itu juga.
Contoh:
 I went to the market yesterday.
 She gave me this doll 2 days ago.
 I was sick yesterday.
3. Menjelaskan kejadian yang berulang kali atau menjadi kebiasaan di masa lalu.
Contoh:
 I went to the beach every morning, when I was in Bali.
 My mom visited me every year, until I graduated.
 I often brought my lunch to school, when I was in Junior High School.
4. Menjelaskan perasaan atau emosi yang terjadi di masa lampau.
Contoh:
 I was happy to see my mom.
 She was so sad because her kitten is gone.
5. Menjelaskan kejadian yang menjadi kebiasaan pada masa lampau namun sudah
tidak lagi dilakukan. Kata kerja yang digunakan adalah used to.
Contoh:
 She used to feed stray cats, but not anymore since she died.
 He used to love me but not anymore.
 I used to ride a bycycle to go to shcool, but now my father gives me a ride.

2. Past continuous tense adalah bentuk kalimat yang disela oleh kejadian lain dan juga
dapat digabungkan dengan kejadian lainnya pada waktu yang bersamaan.

Penggunaan dan Contoh Kalimat Past Continuous Tense

1. To express actions that were ongoing in past (menyatakan kejadian yang berlangsung
di masa lampau)
Keterangan waktu atau time expression yang dapat digunakan, yaitu: at this time
yesterday, at 5 am this morning, all day yesterday, in July, two years ago, last night, and
so on.
a. Two years ago, I was working at a bar in New York City.
b. They were making a toast at this time last night.

2. Two events that happened simultaneously in the past (menunjukkan dua kejadian yang
terjadi secara bersamaan di waktu lampau)
Past continuous tense digunakan untuk menjelaskan peristiwa yang terjadi atau
berlangsung secara bersamaan di masa lampau. Maka dari itu, di sini diperlukan
keterangan waktu while atau when.
a. I was eating while my brother was studying.
b. Diane was watching TV while Andy was taking a nap.
3. Before and after another action or event happened (sebelum dan sesudah tindakan atau
peristiwa lain)

a. We were busy working on our assignment when our parents came home.
b. I was watching the lovely sunset as a flock of birds soared by.

4. Interrupted by another action or event (suatu aktivitas terganggu oleh tindakan atau
persitiwa lain)
Past continuous tense digunakan untuk bercerita tentang kejadian berlangsung di masa lalu
yang tiba-tiba terganggu oleh tindakan lain. Contoh:
a. Mark was having the most wonderful time on the beach when the weather suddenly
turned awful. (Mark sedang bersenang-senang di pantai ketika cuaca tiba-tiba berubah
menjadi buruk.)
b. As they were leaving, the phone rang. (Ketika mereka pergi, telepon berdering.)

4. For a length of time (whether specific or undefined – untuk jangka waktu yang lama apakah
spesifik atau tidak ditentukan)
