1.1 The number of E80s per day per direction on a 2-lane rural road (i.e one lane per
direction) is 125 in 2021. Assume the number of E80s is the same for 365 days
per year. Calculate the cumulative equivalent traffic for the following periods:
(a) 5 years (i.e 2021 to 2025), with no growth in the number of E80s (3)
(b) 5 years (i.e 2021 to 2025), with a growth rate of 2% per annum. (5)
1.2 A new 4-lane freeway with 2 lanes per direction is currently being designed. The
road will open in 4 years. The present traffic is estimated to be 2,500 vehicles per
day per direction of which 8% are heavy vehicles. Assume 2.0 E80s per heavy
vehicle. Assume a growth rate of 7% per annum during the design and construction
period and a growth rate of 4% per annum after opening the road to traffic. Both the
design and analysis period are 20 years. The road is a class A road and it is situated
in a wet climatic region. Refer to TRH4 for calculation formulas and Design
Catalogues.
(a) Calculate the cumulative equivalent traffic for the design period. Clearly show
all your calculation steps. (13)
(b) Select suitable pavement structures from TRH4 for the following pavement
structures: Granular base and hotmix base. Provide drawings of your designs.
You may exclude the selected layers from your designs. (6)
(c) Select a suitable granular base pavement design from the TRH4 catalogue, if
this road was situated in a dry/moderate climatic region. Provide a drawing of
your design. (2)
(d) Would you recommend that block paving be used as a surfacing option for
this road? Also, provide a reason for your answer (1)
Question 1 = 30 marks
Question 2
2.2 A 150mm thick subbase layer is to be stabilised with roadcrete. The roadcrete is
to be spread by mass at 3.0%. The maximum layer density is 2080 kg/m³ and the
specified minimum density is 95% mod AASHTO. How many sacks will be required
per m², if one sack weighs 50 kg? Clearly show all your calculations. (5)
2.3 What soils types are suitable for lime stabilization? (2)
Question 2 = 10 marks
