01. ABOUT THE INTERNET OF THINGS AND MACHINE TO MACHINE
COMMUNICATION

Internet of Things (IoT) and Machine to Machine (M2M) are networks of physical devices and
sensors connected to exchange data. IoT enables our electronic devices to be remotely
monitored and controlled through an existing land-based network infrastructure, creating
opportunities through greater efficiency, accuracy and economic benefit. This industry has
huge economic capacity that is beginning to affect each one of us. Forecasters estimate there
will be more than 25 bn connected devices by 2030.

02. ENABLING IoT BY SATELLITE

Today, existing cellular network infrastructure only provide complete coverage of densely
populated parts of the world’s landmass which comprises less than 20% of the Earth’s total
surface, satellite technology enables us to cover the remaining 80% with communication
services. It will serve as a key enabler to transform IoT connectivity across industries and
geographical borders connecting billions of devices around the world. Satellites are at a
particular advantage, being able to provide pervasive and seamless coverage to IoT applica-
tions.

03. APPLICATIONS

Satellite IoT/M2M enables various value-added applications. Some of the following applica-
tions may be enabled by NanoAvionics satellite IoT solutions:
• Tracking of objects including: fleet management, cargo tracking, other on-the-move
valuable asset tracking.
• Monitoring of infrastructure including: gas or oil pipelines, power grid, civil infrastructure.
• Monitoring of agriculture assets including: soil, pest, greenhouses.
• Monitoring of environmental processes including: humidity, temperature, CO2, light, water
pollution and others.
• Emergency Communication: enabling real time or near real time messaging communication
when all other conventional network infrastructure has failed.
04. NANOAVIONICS SOLUTION

NanoAvionics Multi-purpose 6U and 12U size Nano-satellite Buses (M6P and

M12P) combined with Universal Software Defined Radio “Polaris” is
optimized for such data acquisition and distribution applications.

NanoAvionics buses provide the “Polaris” with a safe, reliable and

flight-proven environment. By default, NanoAvionics ensures that the
“Polaris” is targeting with a market leading accuracy, is thermally and
mechanically sound and operating at 100% duty cycle.

AIS missions can be done with just a single satellite, resulting in 4-15 passes
per region per day, or in a constellation, where the region could be
monitored continually throughout the day.

The challenge with constellations is that in order to be effective, this

requires the satellites to fly in formation and be synchronized in re-visit time.
NanoAvionics recognized this challenge and developed a first-of-its-kind
high impulse density chemical propulsion system (EPSS). The propulsion
system allows for orbit maintenance and atmospheric drag compensation,
ensuring greater efficiency over relaunching of satellites and the highest
quality AIS service no matter the size of the constellation.

NanoAvionics is able to provide various launch options including Sun

Synchronous Orbits - meaning pole to pole coverage and daily satellite
revisit at the same local time, and Equatorial Orbits - resulting in rapid revisit
times over the Earth’s equator and Inclined Orbits covering specific
longitudes.

NanoAvionics’ buses are equipped with hardware allowing data link service
via GEO satellites. This allows them to meet the highest-level requirements
for IoT/M2M data latency and acquired database refresh rates – the capabil-
ity to downlink any message received within 5 minutes or even less after it is
obtained.

At the same time, NanoAvionics hardware contains space-proven propri-

etary firmware which serves to de-collide obtained messages. De-collider
firmware significantly boosts processing efficiency of all received data.

This technical capability makes the M6P or M12P based constellation one of
the most competitive tools to serve the market, matching the features of
conventional satellite constellations due to its unique specifications and
professional capabilities creating the possibility to track assets globally in
near-real-time like never before.

06. RECOMMENDED IoT/M2M PAYLOAD

Satlab Universal IoT/M2M receiver “Polaris” is a fully self-con-

tained software-defined radio receiver covering frequencies
from 100 MHz to 2 GHz.

Furthermore, M6P and M12P creates the opportunity to combine

IoT/M2M receivers with other telecommunication payloads such
as Automatic Identification System receivers for ship tracking,
Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast system receivers
for airplane tracking as well as Earth Imaging payloads. All these
combinations are possible due to the largest nano-satellite class
available payload volume and significant average orbital power
per payload.
