8 Improper Integrals
Calculus II

Goal: To be able to recognize and evaluate improper integrals and apply the comparison test
when necessary.
Recall: Up to this point, we have evaluated definite integrals over finite intervals. That is,
definite integrals of the form Z 2
f (x) dx.
0

Motivating Example: Evaluate and interpret the ‘area function’

Z t
1
A(t) = 2
dx
0 1+x

Note:

Improper Integral of Type I:

Rt
• If a f (x) dx exists for every t ≥ a, then
Z ∞
f (x) dx = .
a

Rb
• If t
f (x) dx exists for every t ≤ b, then
Z b
f (x) dx = .
−∞

We call the improper integral convergent if the limit exists and divergent if the limit does not
exist.

Comparison Test (CT): Suppose f and g are continuous and 0 ≤ g(x) ≤ f (x) for x ≥ a.
R∞
• If a f (x) dx converges, then

R∞
• If a
g(x) dx diverges, then

Example: Use the CT to determine if √ dx converges or diverges.

7.8 Improper Integrals

Recall: Improper integral of Type I

Example: dx

Improper Integral of Type II:

• If f is continuous on [a, b) and discontinuous at b, then
Z b
f (x) dx = .
a

• If f is continuous on (a, b] and discontinuous at a, then

Z b
f (x) dx = .
