Explain the procedure to the patient


2. Wash hands. Provide privacy
3 .Arrange the materials needed.
4. Loosen and fold the top sheet down
to the wait;
and put bath blanket.
5. Remove the pillow and bring
patient’s head close
to the edge of the bed by placing her
diagonally
across the bed. (Remove pins and
ribbons from the
hair, brush and comb to remove
tangles)
6. Line the pillow with rubber protector
and bath
towel and place it under the patient’s
neck and

shoulder so that the head is slightly


inclined.
7. Insert the Kelly pad/shampoo basin
under the
patient’s head. The Kelly pad should
be directed
towards the pale.
8. Cover the eyes with folded face
towel
9. Plug ears with cotton balls.
10. Moisten the hair thoroughly then
pour the soap
solution or liquid shampoo slowly on
the scalp and
hair while the other hand tries to spread
it.
11. Massage the scalp with fingers
using the ends or
tips not the nails.

12. Rinse repeat process until the hair


is thoroughly
cleansed, taking care to avoid undue
jagging or
frequent turning of the head.
13. Use cold water, whenever required
for final
rinse.
14. Squeeze off excess water from the
hair.
15. Remove the eye cover and ear
plugs.
16. With one hand, raise the head while
the other
remove the Kelly pad and drop it to the
pail. Then,
wrap the hair with the bath towel under
the head
and readjust the pillow.

17. Dry the hair well, then comb it.


18. Move back the patient to the center
of the bed.

1. Assess the client’s preference for hair shampoo

7 Lower the side rail closest to you and place the
client in a comfortable position near you.
8. Don clean gloves.
9. Remove the patient’s clothes from their upper
body and cover them with a sheet to maintain
dignity.
10. Remove the pillows from behind the patient’s
head so they are lying flat. This allows water to
drain away from the eyes and ears during the
procedure. Ask the patient to let you know if they
feel uncomfortable in this position at any time.
Remove the head of the bed so you can access
the patient’s hair easily
11. Place a plastic sheet under the patient’s head and
shoulders, and wrap a towel around their
shoulders
12. Position the patient’s head on the shampoo tray,
ensuring you follow manufacturer’s instructions
carefully. A towel can be placed under the neck

13. Following manufacturer’s instructions, ensure the
receptacle that will collect the water from the
shampoo tray is positioned under the drainage
spout.

14 Fill a disposable wash bowl with warm water and


allow the patient to check the temperature. If
required, cover the patient’s eyes with a
disposable washcloth to protect them from water
and shampoo.
15 Using a disposable jug, take water from the
disposable bowl and wet the patient’s hair. Start
at the front hairline and allow the water to drain
down and away from the face, avoiding the eyes
and ears.
16 Apply the shampoo and massage it into the hair.
17 Using the jug, rinse the patient’s hair with water.

18 Apply conditioner, if required by the patient, and


rinse the hair again.

19 Check, regularly, the patient is comfortable and


can maintain their position.

20 Pat the hair with a towel to remove the excess


water – avoid pulling on the hair as this can be
uncomfortable.

21 Remove the shampoo tray and wrap a towel


around the patient’s head to dry the hair and
ensure they do not feel cold.

22 Dry the surrounding skin, paying particular


attention to skin folds in the neck.

23 Change any wet bed linen. Dispose of soiled


bedlinen directly into the linen skip.

24 Replace the bedhead and reposition the patient


so they are comfortable.
25 Help the patient get dressed. Style the patient’s
hair according to their preferences. If possible,
try to make this a social situation – offer them a
drink and a mirror so they can advise you about
the style and participate in their care
26 Finish making the bed and ensure the patient is
warm and comfortable. Wash hands after the
procedure
27 Continually evaluate the client comfort during
the procedure.

28 Chart/ document the type of bath given, skin


assessment and client’s responses in the client’s
medical record.
