Mar 2006 Jakarta, Indonesia
The Jakarta Post is Indonesia’s major English-language daily. Duties

1991 – Compute r Systems Consultant

1996 Perth, Australia and Johor Baru, Malaysia
As an independent computer consultant I undertook a large number of
custom computer programming projects for many different clients,
mainly involving database applications. I also assembled and installed
computer hardware and peripherals, and undertook general systems
design. Over this period I spent a total of 2½ years living in Malaysia as a
freelance computer consultant.
In early 1995 I established a small computer shop in a busy Perth
shopping market, specialising in installing Internet systems directly into
homes and offices. (This was the very early days of commercial Internet
when Internet software/hardware installation was greatly more complex
than it is now.) I also undertook general computer consultancy, and
hardware sales and repairs. I sold this business in January 1996. During
1996 I worked as a freelance consultant on a part-time basis due to a
heavy full-time study load.

Sep 1985 – Systems Engineer, East West Insight Pty Ltd

1991 Perth and Sydney, Australia
East West Insight Pty Ltd was formed for the specific purpose of
developing innovative campaign techniques for the Australian Labor
Party. I was employed to develop computerised direct mail and
telephone canvassing systems, the first time such techniques and
technologies had been used in Australia for political campaign purposes.
My duties later expanded to include development of campaign and
electorate management systems for ALP state and federal electorate
offices. I designed and wrote an integrated computer application
(called Polfile) that incorporated concepts and software technology
developed in previous mass-mailing and tele-canvassing campaigns.

This computer program was installed in every state and federal ALP
electorate office in Australia, and formed the backbone of Labor

In addition to my formal duties, I also frequently assisted writing
campaign texts for state and federal members of parliament and
candidates, and in devising campaign strategy in marginal seats.
