VI. Discussion
What is a Measures of Central Tendency?
A measure of central tendency is a summary statistic that represents the
center point or typical value of a dataset. These measures indicate where most
values in a distribution fall and are also referred to as the central location of a
distribution. In statistics, the three most common measures of central
tendency are the mean, median, and mode. Each of these measures
calculates the
location of the central point using a different method.
The mean is the average of the numbers in data set.
To find the mean, add all the scores in a set of data and divide by the total
number of values.
∑ X1
X=
n
where X =mean
∑ X 1=∑ of the scores
n=frequency
Example 1
Below is the score of 10 students in a 30- item math exam. Find the mean
score.
25, 19, 23, 16, 27, 30, 24, 20, 17, 19
Solution
∑ X1
X=
n
25+ 19+23+16+27 +30+24+ 20+17+19
X=
10
220
X= =22
10
Example 2
Find the mean of this data set:
8,3,7,2,6,4.
Solution:
30
8+3+7+2+6+4= =5
6
So, the mean of the data set is 5
The median is the middle number.
To find the median, arrange the number from smallest to largest or in
increasing order then the number in the middle is the median.
There is always a middle value when there is an odd number of a value. If
the number of values is even, then we use the average of the two middle
values as the median.
Example 1
Below are the ages of nine teachers of Bernardo F. San Juan National High
School. Find the middle age.
57, 22, 46, 31, 48, 33, 25, 54, 50
Solution:
 Arrange the ages from lowest to highest.
22, 25, 31, 33, 46, 48, 50, 54, 57,
 The middle age is 46.
Example 2
Find the median of this data set: 15,4,11,9,13,6.
Solution:
 Arrange the numbers from lowest to highest.
4, 6 ,9, 11, 13, 15
 if there are two median numbers, add them and divide by 2.
20
9 + 11 = =10
2
 So, the median is 10.
The mode is the value that occurs most often in a set of data.
Examples:
Here is a set of shoe sizes sold one day at a shoe store: 6, 5, 7, 6, 7, 7, 5, 7.
Find the mode.
 Size 7 occurs four times. It is the mode.

 Sometimes a distribution may have two or more modes like in this set
of data.
B. 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 4, 5, 5, 5
2 and 5 appeared 3 times.
 The modes of the distribution are 2 and 5. We say that the distribution
is bimodal.

C. Engagement VII.
Activity:
The teacher will read the mechanics;
a) I will give set of exercises involving measures of central
tendency, 1 minute for each question.
b) Solve and write your answer in a 1/2 sheet of paper
c) Raise your paper after 1 minute
D. Assimilation VIII. Generalization
Direction: Complete the Graphic Organizer

IX. Application
(Group Activity)
Direction: Perform the assigned task. Collect all the data from your
groupmates and ask the following questions and record the data. Do these in
5 minutes.
Group 1:
Collect and write the shoe sizes of your groupmates.
1. Arrange the numbers in ascending order.
2. Find the mean, median, and mode
Group 2:
Collect and write the weight of your groupmates.
1. Arrange the numbers in ascending order.
2. Find the mean, median, and mode.

E. EVALUATION Directions: Find the mean, median, and mode of each following data set. If no
numbers appear more than once in a data set, you can write that there is no
mode.

A. 85, 75, 84, 77, 79

1. Mean = 80
2. Median = 79
3. Mode = NO MODE

B. 5, 8, 10, 6, 7, 10, 14, 6, 13, 11

1. Mean = 9
2. Median = 9
3. Mode = 6, 10
