UNIT 1: PHRASES
1.1 Introduction
Below are several definitions of a phrase. You can also take a look at the examples
given to understand better.

1.2 Types of Phrases
There are more than two types of phrases. However, we only learn about these
two types of phrases in order to make our sentences more interesting.
1.2.1 Noun phrase
A noun phrase can be made up of only a noun or a pronoun. However, to make your
noun phrase better or more interesting, you can add some other words in front of
your noun. Take a look at the examples below.

The words in red above are called premodifiers. They are used to make your noun
phrase better by giving more information to it. There are four different types of
premodifiers that you can use.

Here are some of the examples of noun phrase that you can make.

1.2.2 Prepositional phrase
A prepositional phrase consists of at least preposition and an object. The object
here can be a noun or a pronoun. We also add other words to describe the object.
Let us do a quick revision on the prepositions.

We can make prepositional phrase by putting the prepositions and some other
words. Take a look at the prepositional phrase below.

UNIT 2: SENTENCES
2.1 Introduction
Below are several definitions of a sentence. You can also take a look at the
examples given to understand better.
Definitions • It can be short and simple or long and complicated.
• It begins with a capital letter and ends with a full stop.
• It consists of at least a subject and a predicate.
• Subject refers to the main idea of the sentence.
• Predicate refers to the elaboration of the subject.
• The shortest sentence can only have a subject and a verb.
Here are some of the examples of sentences.

Ram and Tara cried loudly when they heard the sad news.
2.2 Types of Sentence Structures
Different types of sentences structures can make our composition lively and more
interesting. This is also another crucial element in getting good grades for your
writing. In this module, we are learning three different types of sentences, namely
simple, compound and complex sentences.
2.2.1 Simple sentence
A simple sentence contains a subject and a verb. It expresses a simple complete
thought that can stand on its own. Simple sentences are usually short but you may
also use compound subject and compound verbs to make the sentences longer.
Below are some examples of simple sentence. I also bold the subjects and underline
the verbs in the sentences.
a. single subject + single verb -> Chris showered.
b. single subject + compound verb -> Chris showered and dressed.
c. compound subject + single verb -> Chris and Mark showered.
d. compound subject + compound verb -> Chris and Mark showered and dressed.

2.2.2 Compound sentence
Compound sentences join two independent clauses together with a conjunction. The
two independent clauses can stand on their own. Look that the sentence below to
understand compound sentences better.
a. independent clauses -> Chris woke up early. Chris was late for work.
b. compound sentence -> Christ woke up early but was late for work.
The word ‘but’ is of the coordinating conjunctions that can be used to make
compound sentences. A very popular acronyms for coordinating conjunctions is
FANBOYS. Take a look at these coordinating conjunctions and their examples in
the table below.

Example: I go to the library for I love to read.
and • It is used to connect two or more ideas.
• It is used to show addition.
Example: Anna likes to go to the library and study.
nor • It is used to show a non-contrasting negative idea.
• It can also be used to add more negativity.
Example: John did not do his homework, nor he cared to bring his book.
but • It is used to show contrast or exception.
Example: Sally is an intelligent girl but she is lazy.
or • It is used to show choices or options.
Example: Do you like chocolate or strawberry ice cream?
yet • It is used to show contrast or exception (often unexpected)
Example: Her advice seems strange yet I believe she is right.
so • It is used to show consequences.
Example: Anna was ill so she stayed at home.

2.2.3 Complex sentence
A complex sentence consists of an independent clause and also one or more
dependent clause. The dependent clause here cannot stand on its own. We use
subordinating conjunctions to construct complex sentences. Look that the sentence
below to understand complex sentences better.
a. independent clause -> Ken went to sleep.
b. dependent clause -> after he finished his work
c. complex sentence -> Ken went to sleep after he finished his work.
The word ‘after’ is of the subordinating conjunctions that can be used to construct
complex sentences. There is a sentence that can help you to remember
subordinating conjunctions better.

time for us to learn how to construct our sentences. Here are some techniques
that can help you to construct your sentences better.
3.2 Sentence Expansion 1: WH Family
One of the ways to construct your own sentences is through the WH family
technique. These WH words will guide you to answer certain questions, which make
your sentence more informative and complete. Let’s take a look at these WH words.

3.3 Sentence Expansion 2: SVO Table
Besides WH family, we can also use SVO Table to help us write better sentences.
Before we go any further, I would like to tell you what SVO Table is about. SVO
refers to Subject Verb Object. Take a look at the visual below.

4.1 Introduction
Congratulations! You have reached the final unit for this module. You have already
known how to write sentences correctly and we are moving one step forward to
punctuation. Punctuation makes a lot of difference in meaning if it is placed
wrongly. Here are some of the punctuations that are useful for you.
Symbol Name Uses and examples
’ apostrophe • It is used for short forms and to show possession.
Example: Let’s go to Mark’s house.
‘’ speech • It is used for direct speech.
marks Example: ‘How are you?’ she asked me.
. full stop • It is used to mark the end of a sentence.
Example: This is an elephant.
, comma • It is used to organise thoughts or to show a short
pause.
Example: I want to buy eggs, butter and salt.
? question • It is needed after a direct question. It can be just a
mark word or a whole sentence.
