Pets, everyone at some point in their life has considered owning one; it’s the best idea ever!
Until they realize that it’s quite the challenge, after all you have to maintain their aliveness.
Some pets are easier to care for than others, But if you’re a noob pet owner looking for a
“simple” start, then invest in turtles! These Rotund Robust Reptiles are a relatively easy option
for beginners, sure you still need to provide stuff like feed, terrarium, and time. I said it was
easy, but that doesn’t mean u shouldn’t put any effort in you lazy-! One turtle you should look
into, is the Trachemys Scripta² or Yellow-Bellied Slider.
A relatively fine choice for a first pet: these turtles is native to SE United States, with a greenish
yellow shell, and yellow vein pattern adorning its mandible & neck; they can grow up to 7 lbs,
and 1 foot upon reaching maturity. These little Koopas can live up to 20-40 years if your skill
issue self doesn’t mess up! So, let’s show you how to not be responsible for indirect murder!!!
Tanks & Terrariums:
First thing you should consider, is where this turtle is gonna live. Cause you can’t just let it
wander off into the wild, as that would defeat the porpoise of having a pet; as a general rule
you should have 10 gallons for every inch of their shell. But a tank about 75-100 gallons can do
the trick, make sure to also fill it up with water that’s 16-18 inches deep for hydration &
temperature control; you would also need some essentials to keep the tank in a livable
condition. Like a tank filter, heater, thermometer, and basking dock. Tank filters are present
for tank hygiene, and waste management you can either use canister filter or power filter,
either can work depending on how much you’re willing to do water changes. Heaters, and
thermometers are also for temperature control as they allow for these turtles to gain heat as
they’re cold blooded animals, thus can’t rely on their own lack of body heat. A recommended
water temp would be about, 75 to 80 °F ; thermometers are to measure the heat of the tank.
Now the basking dock is a portion of the tank that’s out of the water, this is because Yellow
Bellied Sliders are semi-aquatic reptiles and aren’t supposed up be in liquid 24/7. Basking docks
serve to provide them with UVB light ( sunlight substitute), warmth & relaxation it’s normally
complimented with a UVB light bulb to do the former. An ideal temperature for this, would be
bout’ 80-85 °F. These are some of the integral parts of your terrarium, but substrate & a few
algae-growing rocks will do you some good.
Diet:
Like most animals, turtles need to chow down. So that they don’t die of hunger, a Trachemy
Scripta²‘s pallet is an omnivore so it’s pallet mostly consists of both leaves, seeds, roots, algae,
and meal worms, wax worms, crayfish, as well as fish; this is due to Yellow Bellied Sliders
frequently hunting for fish in the wild. You could also give them some calcium supplements/
turtle bones in order to keep their calcium levels & mandibles in check.
