Today I would like to tell you about the novel "Wuthering

Heights" written by Emily Jane Bronte.Emily Bronte was born on July

30, 1818 in West Yorkshire, United Kingdom. Emily Bronte is an
English writer and poet. She is the author of the novel "Wuthering
Heights", as well as a number of poems . Emily was the fifth child of a
poor family. A friendly family lived in the middle of nowhere. Emily
was a very homely, quiet, and religious woman. She wasn't very
sociable, and she didn't have any friends. In 1847, she published her
main novel, Wuthering Heights. Unfortunately, during the writer's
lifetime, it was not as enthusiastically received as after its second
edition of Charlotte Bronte after the death of her sister. She died on
December 19, 1848, at the age of 30.
The novel "Wuthering Heights" is considered one of the classic
examples of romantic literature. This book is about love, written in the
genre of the Gothic novel.
The title of the novel tells about the main place of its action – the
family estate of Earnshaw, which is called Wuthering Heights. This
grim old house on the moors of the north of England, in Yorkshire, is
hardly a comfortable and welcoming place. It is cold, gloomy and strict,
and by the end of the novel becomes even more severe. Wuthering
Heights embodies not only the grim events that unfold in it, but it
contrasts markedly with Starling's Myza - the happy home of the Linton
family.
The author raises two problems in the novel-love and
revenge . We can see the sick love of Heathcliff and Catherine, and at
the same time, the solemn love of Catherine and Hareton. Revenge is
one of the most important, a factor that leads the main characters to their
sad fate. Emily Bronte proves that there is nothing good in
eternal revenge and that the pain inflicted for the purpose of revenge is
more destructive than genuine.
Now I will tell you about the characters of the novel and some traits
of their characters. I think the characters of the novel can’t be called
onlysympathetic or unsympathetic. Even the main
character Heathcliff can evokea sense of compassion , despite the fact
that he is the main unsympathetic character in the book.
In the novel, we meet the fate of two generations. The main
characters are Heathcliff-the adopted son of old Mr. Earnshaw, the
friend and then lover of Catherine Earnshaw, an unsociable, gloomy,
very cruel man. Catherine Earnshaw is a free-spirited and selfish beauty
who loved Heathcliff with all of her heart, but married someone
else. Edgar Linton is an educated, well-mannered , intelligent young
man, Catherine's husband, gentle and caring.
Now let me tell some words about the plot.
Catherine and Hindley's father found the starving orphan on one of
his trips to Liverpool. He was named Heathcliff after a son who died in
childbirth. Hindley Earnshaw humiliated him in every
way, but Catherine was friends with him, and they grew up together in
the meadows. They were attached to each other. Heathcliff lived for the
love of Catherine.
Heathcliff is dark and mysterious. Catherine Earnshaw is strong, not
prone to suffering, she is different from other girls of this background.
For all her education and love of books, she is wild and selfish.
Katherine met the Lintons in an accident (she was bitten by the Lintons '
bulldog and was forced to stay with the Lintons for five weeks in full
care and attention). She was attracted to laughte and merriment , as well
as Isabella and Edgar Linton.
Despite her love for Heathcliff, Catherine married Edgar.
When Heathcliff found out about it, he was gone.
Three years later, he returned with thoughts of
revenge. Heathcliff married Isabella. Catherine died giving birth to
Edgar Linton's daughter. Twelve years later, Heathcliff continued his
revenge. He hated everyone.
Haunted by images of Catherine Linton, Heathcliff died. Katie
and Haretondecided to get married. The romantic story ended in
accordance with the Gothic traditions. The world finally descended on
Wuthering Heights.
In conclusion of all of the above, I would like to emphasize once
again: the novel tells about important problems in human relationships,
whether it's love, friendship, or something else. I think that
the title"Wuthering Heights" has a special meaning. These Heights
are terrible, gloomy, sometimes destructive. Like Heathcliff, like
Catherine, and their feelings. The death of Heathcliff conceals the main
meaning of the novel's ending – the senselessness of hatred. The main
character hated Linton all his life, anger and grief turned him into a cruel
monster, but the long-awaited revenge did not
bring Heathcliff satisfaction and did not reconcil him to his own
conscience .In conclusion, I highly recommend reading the book.
