More than Hollywood.

If you find Hollywood movies too commercial, what about the great New York directors?
Each of them has his own style, but they have three things in common: their films are
deeper and more serious than typical Hollywood productions, they often show the city of
New York, and none of the four is a "while Anglo-Saxon" American!

A. Martin Scorsese was born into a family of Sicilian immigrants, in an area of New York
dominated by the Mafia. As a child he witnessed a lot of crime and brutality, which he later
portrayed in his films. They are usually set in New York, and the characters are ,as a
reviewer once wrote, "the kind of people you wouldn't want to know". He often casts
Italian-American actors Robert De Niro (Taxi Driver, Goodfellas) and Leonardo DiCaprio
(The Aviator, The Departed) Scorsese's films were sometimes criticized for the violence
they contain. The director himself says: "All right, but that's the reality I see". In 2007 he
finally won an Oscar for The Departed.

B. Frances Ford Coppola also comes from an Italian-American background. The picture
that brought him fame was The Godfather (1972), the story of a Mafia family; it also made
Al Pacino a star. Two years later, with The Godfather-2 Coppola became one of only five
directors ever to win Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay for the
same movie. His most ambitious film is Apocalypse Now, a Vietnam War epic inspired by
Joseph Conrad's novel Heart of Darkness.

C. Comedy director and actor Woody Allen, whose real name is Allan Stewart
Konigsberg, comes from a New York Jewish family. A typical Allen comedy(such as Annie
Hall or Manhattan) is both set and shot in New York contains lots of dialogues and features
a typical hero, played by the director himself: the "intellectual urban neurotic". The black-
and-white shot of New York in Manhattan have become part of cinema history.

D. Spike Lee was born in Atlanta, Georgia-not a good place to be for an ambitious
young black man in the 1950s. At a very early age he moved to New York. Initially he
made films about the lives and problems of African Americans , such as Do the Right Thing
and Malcolm X. His first movie with a white character, played be Edward Norton, was 25th
Hour (2002). It was also the first feature film to include spectacular shots of Ground Zero,
where the World Trade Center used to stand.

Britain For All Seasons.

The real Britain is a land of unspoiled beauty, where the mood and rhythm of the
countryside changes from season to season.

Summer is the season off long, long days, when a variety of pastimes and pursuits can be
enjoyed. The beach is a favorite place to relax and the more active will find an exciting
range of water sports in Britain, from gentle sailing, to the action-packed sport of jet-skiing.
The warm summer months are the ideal time to enjoy the delights of eating outside, a stroll
of peaceful rural surroundings or a leisurely round of golf. Make the most of the fresh air by
cycling along pretty country lanes or by taking a boat trip on one of Britain's many rivers,
canals and lakes. Or for the more daring, how about taking a balloon trip and enjoying the
view of the countryside from the air. There are so many attractions to choose from in the
summer months - from pageant and tradition to a host of arts festivals.
In autumn the British landscape assumes a breathtaking beauty and it is a perfect time of the
year for outdoor activities such as walking, golfing and cycling. The game shooting season
is also in full swing and many hotels can arrange for you to participate. As the days become
cooler you may prefer to make the most varied entertainment provided by Britain's towns
and cities. Enjoy a visit to the cinema, theater or perhaps a classical concert.
In rural communities, autumn is the time to gather the crops. Take a peek inside some of
Britain's churches and cathedrals, which will be decorated with flowers and fruit for the
harvest festival. Fireworks and bonfires will illuminate the sky during the evening of
November 5th. This is to commemorate the unsuccessful attempt to blow up the Houses of
Parliament by Guy Fawkes in1605.
Winter heralds the season on Christmas festivals. Towns and cities countrywide are brightly
decorated for the occasion. Shopping is always a delight at this time of the year, when shops
are full of fascinating Christmas goods and window displays of large department stores will
delight all ages. You will also find indoor shopping complexes around the country, which
make looking for gifts a real pleasure whatever the temperature outside. After Christmas is
the season of annual sales when both travel and shopping bargains are to be found.

Britain has a vast array of museums and galleries countrywide, and winter is an excellent
time to see them when the flock of summer visitors has dispersed. Many stately homes also
remain open throughout the year.

Springtime sees the countryside bloom and radiate with life. Daffodils, bluebells and
primroses can be seen on hillsides and in the fields everywhere. The brightest warmer days
see the return of many birds, who migrated during the winter and the woodlands and
meadows come alive with their songs. It is one of the loveliest times of the year to visit
Britain and appreciate the outstanding countryside.

Riding is an exhilarating pastime to enjoy in the spring months and keen fishermen will
find some of the world's game fishing rivers in Britain.
