Chapter I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 University Background

President University aims to create an institution of learning that prepares future

leaders to be able to compete internationally. With this ambitious goal, President University is
trying to give their students necessary experience to sharpen their skills, knowledge and
wisdom that they get during their study. One of these attempts includes the Internship
Program organized by Internship and Career Center (ICC). The Internship Program is
conducted in the eighth and ninth semester with a minimum fulfillment of one year in three
separate semesters inside the real working environment. An internship will be a great
opportunity for the student to integrate career-related skills learned in an academic setting
into a supervised work experience. While working for a company or organization, students
can learn and get more knowledge, skills and experience in a professional environment.
Discipline and responsibility as interpersonal skills are also highly required to achieve
personal goals and to give valuable contributions to the company they applied to. Therefore,
the internship program may give good chances for students, university and the company.

1.2 Internship Background

Internship is widely perceived as an influential experience that benefits the student

itself, university, and the company. Internships also provide the students with valuable
professional experience, skills, and networks, also enable the student to implement their
academic knowledge to real-life work environments, and give the employers a steady stream
of new talent with fresh ideas. According to Bernsteiner & Schlogl (2016), an internship is a
short time job that a student does in order to gain experience. Then, consequently, internships
have been designated as a “high impact” practice that improves student outcomes. Besides
the students can implement their academic knowledge to a real work environment,

4
internships also help students master professional soft skills such as communication skill,
punctuality, and time management.

Internship programs are important and necessary for students as a stepping stone into
a future career, as President University provides academic credit for one year or three
semesters for students to do an internship and legitimizes the importance of internship
program as a learning experience. By having an internship program, it helps students to
prepare themselves for their career after they graduate from the university. As Campbell
(2016) stated that it should be noted that career has no limit for the speed or direction of a
persons’ moves or even on how achievement is defined regarding work experience, yet
internship is discussed as one way to start one’s career.

Previous studies conducted by James (2018), have shown that students who have
completed internship programs earn higher starting salaries, greater job satisfaction, receive
more job offers and are offered jobs more quickly, and display improved job-related skills,
better interviewing skills, and better career preparation.

1.3 Internship Purpose

The main purpose of the Internship Program provided by President University is to

prepare the student before entering a real working environment. Other internship purposes
also listed as follows:

1. Able to work both individual or teamwork;

2. Able to take bigger responsibility and achieve better performance;
3. Find about personal strength and weakness in working in different kind of
situation and responsibility;
4. Build more professional connection toward the research institution;
5. Enhance more interpersonal skills and other skills that are necessary.

5
1.4 Internship Benefit

1.4.1 For University

The benefit of the Internship Program towards the university are; (1) the university
student’s become well known in the working environment, thus making the university image
more popular, (2) obtain new information about employment acceptance and trends going on
in the working environment, thereby the university could adjust technical and soft skills
needed for the student.

1.4.2 For Student

The benefits of the internship program to the student are; (1) being able to apply the
knowledge that the student got in the university into the real working simulation, (2) gain

INTERNSHIP ACTIVITIES

3.1 Job Description in Artistic Department

The art department is the division of a film or television production’s office crew
concerned with visual artistry. The art department creates the overall look by working under
the management of the supervising art director, or the art director, and together they are
responsible for arranging and creating each set and set element as designed by the production
designer (the head of the art department) who is in direct collaboration with the director,
producers, and showrunner/s in the case of television.

The art department team does not facilitate the production of each set by themselves. The art
department liaises with several very important departments in a (sometimes) fluid step by
step process in order to create each set or set element. Depending on the needs of the
production this may include the set decoration, construction, scenic, props, greens, locations,
visual effects, special effects, stunts, costume, hair, makeup, transport, camera, grip, and
electric departments.

3.2 Job Description in Set Dresser

Set dressers are crucial members of the artistic crew in the film industry, responsible
for creating and enhancing the visual ambiance of film sets. Working closely with production
designers and art directors, set dressers contribute to the overall aesthetic and atmosphere of a
scene by selecting, arranging, and placing props, furniture, and other set decorations. Their
meticulous attention to detail and creative flair help bring the director's vision to life and
immerse audiences in the world of the film. Set dressers play a vital role in shaping the visual
narrative of a film, contributing to the immersive experience that transports audiences to the
world of the story. With their creativity, attention to detail, and collaborative spirit, set
dressers bring sets to life, infusing each scene with authenticity, atmosphere, and visual
richness.

Chapter IV

PERSONAL RESULTS/EVALUATION/POINT LEARNED

Open communication was one of the strongest and most apparent skills that I learned
during my internship. When I first started interning, I was intimidated and nervous to ask too
many questions because I did not want to admit that I did not understand or that I needed
extra help with something. It takes longer for me to adjust to this kind of new environment,
luckily I got over that struggle because asking questions is the only way to learn what you are
really supposed to be doing. I found that my boss and fellow staff members appreciated it
more if I asked too many questions to make sure I really understood what it was doing and
that I did it correctly even if it was. If I had not worked with such cooperative and helpful
people, I probably would have been too intimidated to ask questions in my next job. Now that
I know it is not bad to ask questions, I won’t have to struggle with it in my future job.
Without open communication between everyone in an office, I don’t see how any work can
be done. The department was helpful when I had questions, but it was good for me to oversee
every aspect of my own internship and, in the end, has been advantageous and made good
discipline for me personally. I believe this approach made the experience mirror that of an
actual job search.

Chapter V

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

5.1 Conclusion

In Conclusion, the Internship program is a way to open opportunities to experience a

real working environment. It also benefits the student by giving a necessary skill, technical or
operational, as well as possible job offers from related companies and institutions. As an
intern at Artheraphy Indonesia, I realize that Artheraphy directly teaches me on how to do my
work. Also, it is me who discipline myself to adapt, socialize, and learn to listen carefully to
the advice, guidance and direction given by all staff members, chief and also my supervisor.
One thing important is that Artheraphy does give me an environment to develop my skills, to
learn anything about artistic, and more discipline. However, if I succeeded in becoming an
improved person, in terms of discipline, wisdom, knowledge and interpersonal skills, it is
also because of the urge to develop myself in order to get ready for the real world . The key
of an internship depends on the individual itself, not the company's action. The key of an
internship depends on the individual itself, not the company.

5.2 Recommendation

Working within the artistic crew of the film industry is a journey fraught with
challenges and rewards. By following these recommendations – educating oneself, gaining
experience, specializing, building a portfolio, networking, embracing adaptability, and
maintaining persistence – aspiring artists can navigate the complex terrain of the industry and
carve out fulfilling careers in visual storytelling. As they embark on this odyssey, they join a
lineage of creative visionaries who have shaped the cinematic landscape and inspired
audiences around the world.
