A long action interrupted by a short action in the past: We were watching TV, when suddenly the TV set broke down. Two or more simultaneous actions in the past: While I was cooking dinner, he was laying the table. Habitual actions that irritate the speaker in the past: The children were always screaming. Descriptions and specifications: People were walking, the sun was shining, the birds.
