IV. SHORT PARAGRAPH.

Directions: Read the introduction about how the arrangement of particles and energy
changes as a substance undergoes changes in state, then answer the following questions.

When a solid, like ice, is heated, its particles start to move faster because they gain energy.
As the particles move more, they begin to break away from their fixed positions, and the
solid turns into a liquid, like water. If you keep heating the liquid, the particles gain even
more energy and move even faster, eventually breaking away from each other completely.
This is when the liquid turns into vapor or gas, like steam. On the other hand, when vapor
cools down, it loses energy, and the particles slow down, coming closer together to form a
liquid again. If you cool the liquid even more, the particles lose more energy, slow down
further, and become tightly packed again, turning back into a solid.

26-30. What happens to the particles and their energy when ice melts into water and then turns
into steam, and how do the particles change when steam cools back into water and then freezes
into ice? Use examples from everyday life to explain.
