ANSWERS for ACTIVITIES/WORKSHEETS/EXAM TYPE QUESTIONS

QUESTION 1
1.1 - Poaching
- Alien plant invasions
- Any OTHER factor that can destruct habitats/e.g. poor farming
methods, urbanization, deforestation, mining, golf estates, loss of
wetlands and grasslands (Any 1) (1)
(Mark the first ONE only)

1.2 - It ensures food/fresh water/for humans

because it can be obtained from the environment
- Various plant species provides medicine
for the treatment of diseases and ailments
- It is a source of fossil fuel
which humans need to generate heat/cooking food
- It ensures that the climate is regulated and
therefore floods are controlled in wetlands, protecting
humans
- It keeps diseases in check because predators eat the
sick animals
- It plays a role in the carbon dioxide and oxygen balance in
the atmosphere
- ensuring healthy air for humans
- By providing forms of recreation and ecotourism
it also contributes to human quality of life (Any 3 x 2) (6)
(Mark the first THREE only) (7)

QUESTION 2
2.1 (a) - The variety
- of plant and animal species on Earth
OR
- A range of species and
- the number of organisms making up each species (2)

(b) - Plant species that are not indigenous in an area and

- that have been introduced to that area (2)

9
2.2 - Habitat destruction (OR e.g. farming methods, urbanization,
deforestation, mining, loss of wetlands)
- Poaching (2)

2.3 - Introducing a natural enemy from the plant's environment

- allowing it to reproduce and
- control the numbers of the invasive plant (3)

2.4 - Choose the method that is most resource efficient

- with the least impact on the environment (2)
(11)

QUESTION 3

3.1 Both  the total amount of waste produced and the amount of
recyclable material increasedfrom 2018 to 2021
(2)

3.2 - People collect and sell waste at buy-back centres and

benefits therefore economically/creates own jobs
- People who collect waste and take it to recycling depots
 contributes to sustainable use of materials
- Recycling saves energyand therefore reduces the amount of
energy used to make new products (any 2 x 2)
(4)
(6)

QUESTION 4
4.1 Take up land that can be utilize for housing
As population of city increase the amount of waste increase 
landfills to small
Illegal dumping any (2)
4.2 Disadvantages in disposal of solid waste in landfill sites
 The wastes in a landfill attract vermin (rats, cockroaches
etc) and these often harbor disease vectors
 Landfills give off bad odours /are ugly/presence leads to
urban decay because only poor people are prepared
to live near them
 Wind- blown litter causes a pollution problem
 Sites attract informal “pickers” /poor people seeking
food/building materials often exposing themselves to
health hazards risk/injury
 Highly flammable methane gas sometimes escapes from
the decomposing wastes can cause health hazards
 Streams near the landfill sites often become
contaminated with hazardous leachate/chemicals
 Borehole water gets contaminated by leachate/chemicals

that percolates into the groundwater (2)
(any 2 x 1)
4.3 Advantages of incineration

o Incineration plant is quite small so valuable land is not

used
o No attraction to pests so less risk of disease
o Heat generated can be used/incinerators built as part of
housing projects can save energy
any two (2)
Disadvantages of incineration

o May generate toxic fumes (especially from burning

plastics)
cause health hazards 
o Can be expensive to buildmoney can be used for other
social
interventions
o Seepage of wastes may pollute groundwater
o Fuel is consumed to begin the combustion process
any two (2)

4.4 o Properly managed landfills are lined to isolate the dumped

waste from ground water supplies so that toxic leachate
does not cause contamination. 
o Decomposition occurs anaerobically in a sealed and
capped landfill and the resulting methane stays trapped
unless it is tapped for use. 
