STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES for MAKING CONNECTIONS WITH

NORMAL HOLE CONDITIONS FOR GOOD HOLE CLEANING

VERTICAL HOLE

 Drill stand down. DO NOT let the weight drill off. Put Active Heave Compensators OFF in the last
few meters drilled .
 Reduce rotary speed to 40-60 RPM then pick up smoothly off bottom while maintaining full
circulation. The reduced rotary speed will reduce whirl tendencies after taking the weight off the
bit coming off bottom. Monitor torque for indications of stick slip. Adjust Surface RPM accordingly
 Do not backream more than 1 joint on connections or circulate for more than 5 minutes, if
possible. Additional circulation time may be necessary to improve hole cleaning. This is preferred
over control drilling due to patterning induced by lower ROP. Rotation should be low enough to
avoid inducing whirl off-bottom. Monitor vibration sensors and perform whirl fingerprint test to
determine safe backreaming parameters. Backreaming more than 1 joint is at the discretion of DSV .
 Shut Down Booster Pump at top of Backream
 Work the pipe one more time to ensure that the hole conditions have not changed. Shut down pumps
and make connection. DO NOT overpull more than 25Klbs . Inform DSV / ToolPusher in case of
tight spot encountered . Never fire Jar in the first attempt to clear the tight spot .
 Flow-check to active pits for 2 minutes, then divert to trip tank and record flow-back volume
 While drilling and tripping: Monitor, record, and report PU, SO weight, off bottom stationary rotating
weight, and off-bottom rotary torque with every 2-4 stands on T&D charts (pumps off if possible -
document if data was taken with pumps on).

After Connection

 Ramp up pumps up to 25% of drilling flow rate . Observe mud returns to flow line .
 Pick up enough to remove Slips . Engage the Active Heave Compensators (AHC) on .
 Gradually increase the flow rate to drilling flow rate by staging up the mud pumps
 Take survey. For delayed surveys , wait for the first MWD frame turns green the start rotating the
string slowly with 40-60 RPM . For regular surveys , wait for the MWD engineers’ call if the survey
is up then kick the rotary in with 40-60 RPM .
 Take MWD Surveys at every connection . If missed one, DO NOT attempt to repeat the Survey .
Make sure at least one acceptable MWD Survey is taken in every 3 stands drilled .
 Mud loggers to record flow back on connections and advise driller and DSV immediately if there
are any changes from fingerprint
 Lower string and tag bottom with reduced Surface RPM of 40-60 RPM and full drilling flow rate.
Apply weight quickly (10-20 seconds) when returning to bottom . Raise rotary from low rpm up to full
rpm after WOB has been applied (monitor for stickslip).
 DO NOT raise rotary to drilling RPM before weight is applied to bit.
 Pump sweeps per DSM
 Bring Booster Pumps on to desired rate
 Drill Ahead
