Assignment 1 – 15%

1. Presentation of the Topic and the Research Problem

Paragraph 1: Introductory paragraph presents your topic - includes general discussions about the issue and why it matters. [WHO &
WHAT]
Choose a topic: an assessment of the value of social media use in communication

Paragraph 2: What is YOUR STUDY specifically going to address? Identify the aspect of the topic that you will focus your research on.
Explain WHY we should care about your research. [WHY is this necessary?]

2. Review of Scholarly Literature [Annotated Bibliogrphy]

Annotated Bibliography of six empirical articles 150 words x 6 articles (roughly 900 words in total) + Brief discussion of your search
process and selection logics for the six articles (+ 600 words).

3. Hypothesis Statement and Conclusion

A short, clear statement for your research. Clearly state your independent & dependent variables.

4. A reference list in APA format

Didn't we list the citations in the Annotated Bibliography section? Yes, you did. You can include hundred citations in your text, but they
must ALWAYS be listed at the end of the academic article as "References" or "Bibliography" list - this is a protocol.
Section 1: Presentation of Topic & Research Problem
2 Paragraphs = 2 Tasks

First Paragraph: Presentation of Topic

•Present your topic. Explain what area you’re studying.
•What are some important aspects of this topic? Why is it relevant?
•Think of it as introducing your readers to WHO and WHAT you are talking
about.

Second Paragraph: Research Problem

•This becomes more specific to YOUR study.
•Explain the research problem YOU will be studying.
•What is the ONE thing about this topic you want to focus on?
•Why it is necessary to know more about this aspect?
Think of it as telling your readers WHY we are doing this study.
Section 2: Annotated bibliography
This section is a systematic literature review (as opposed to a summarized literature review
- which you are more accustomed to seeing in journal articles or research papers)
•We will review SIX empirical articles. Empirical means..? (observations and data about
attitudes or behaviors)
•Because an annotated bibliography is systematic: We review each article separately as a
single entity.
•This means your literature review has SIX sub-headings. Each review is 150 words.
Bringing the total to 900 words.
Citation format: APA

IN ADDITION TO THIS, YOU MUST ALSO INCLUDE:

•A 600-word description of the literature search process.
•Include what databases and search terms you used.
•Were there any instances where you had to change the search terms or databases?
•How did the search process itself shape your research topic and problem?
• This is how your Annotated Bibliography should look like
APA style format (7th ed.) (proper citation, annotation, and the hanging indent starts
from the second line of the citation).
More details on Annotated Bibliography:
https://www.lib.sfu.ca/help/cite-write/citation-style-guides/annotated-bibliography
Each annotated bibliography we’re doing in this assignment includes:
- A line of full citation just like what you would do in the reference list
- And the annotation (which is a brief summary, discussion of the methods and results in the article, and
explanation of how they’re relevant or helpful for your study)

• Don’t forget in-text citation!

• Proper format for this assignment: APA

• Title of your research project (subtitle if necessary), page numbers at

the bottom of your page
• Make sure your references are consistent. (In-text citatation &
bibliography list at the end of your assignment)
Section 2: Annotated bibliography
In each annotation, provide information about their research design
and the empirical aspects of the study conducted.
Things like N (population/sample size), sampling / data collection
method, data analysis method etc. are valuable inclusions.
Consider these elements:
•Brief summary of the study
•Methodologies the authors use
•Their Findings
•Connection to your own research (how they are relevant and can be
helpful for your study)
Annotation
• Generally, an annotation is approximately
100-300 words in length (one paragraph).
However, your professor may have different expectations, so it is
recommended that you clarify the assignment guidelines.
• An annotation may include the following information:
• A brief summary of the source
• The source’s strengths and weaknesses
• Its conclusions
• Why the source is relevant in your field of study
• Its relationships to other studies in the field
• An evaluation of the research methodology
• Information about the author’s background
• Your personal conclusions about the sources
Section 3: Hypothesis & Conclusion
In this section you will refine your research problem based on what you have learned in the
literature review.
You will also make the research problem more specific and propose how you will study it.
You will present:
•The refined topic and focus of your proposed study.
•Variables at play: Independent, Dependent, Intervening/Mediating (if any)
•A clear hypothesis statement that engages the independent and dependent variable.
Your concluding paragraph:
•In essence, will convey that based on importance of the selected topic and review of
scholarly literature, you are proposing a study that will measure <the two variables>
using empirical data collection & a research method.
