GOHAR COMPUTER SCIENCE 6

Key Book
Unit 1

A. Answer the following questions in brief.

1. Define a computer.

Ans. A computer is an electronic machine. It can store instructions provided

to it. A computer responds to the new instruction that is given. A computer can
also store data. It can find and get back data or information that has been
stored in the memory of the computer. A computer can also perform different
operations on the data stored in it.

2. Write at least three advantages of using a computer.

Ans. Three advantages of using a computer are:

i. Computers work speedier than human beings. You can easily do a

week’s work in a day.
ii. Computers help us complete our work without mistakes or errors.

iii. The computer is a great source of entertainment.

3. How is the hardware different from the software?

Ans. Hardware is the physical, touchable, material components of the

computer. They are the electronic, magnetic, mechanical, and electric devices
while Software is that part of the computer which you cannot touch. They are
the programs and applications that run on a computer system.

4. In how many categories can you divide hardware components of the

computer? Name them.

Ans. Hardware components can be divided into the following categories:

a) system unit
b) input devices
c) output devices
d) storage devices

1
5. How does the processor perform its function?

Ans. The processor has two components: the arithmetic logic unit, and the
control unit. It reads an instruction from memory. Then it interprets the
instruction which is coded. After that processor reads the data for the
execution of instructions. The processor also performs logical or arithmetic
operations on data if necessary. Then it writes the data to give us the results.

6. Name the output devices you have studied in the lesson.

Ans. Names of output devices are:

Monitor, speaker and printer.

7. Write short note on the following.

a) Keyboard b) Printer c) Digital camera d) CD/DVD

e) Hard disk f) USB flash memory g) Monitor

a) Keyboard

The keyboard is a slightly modified form of traditional typewriter keyboard. It

has more than 100 buttons on it that are called keys. A keyboard has the
following types of keys:

1. Alphanumeric keys – all of the letters and numbers on the keyboard. A-Z
and 0-9.
2. Punctuation keys – All of the keys associated with punctuation such as
the comma, period, semicolon, brackets, parenthesis and so on. Also, all
of the mathematical operators such as the plus, minus and equal sign.
3. Special keys – All of the other keys on the computer keyboard such as
the function keys (F1, F2, F3…. F12) , control keys, arrow keys, Caps lock
key, Delete key, Escape key, Enter key, Backspace key, Alt key, etc.

b) Printer
A printer prints text or illustrations on paper. There are many different types of
printers, but the most common of them are laser printers and ink-jet printers.
An output by a printer is called the hard copy.

c) Digital camera

Cameras store images on a film strip. This film strip is developed and photos
are obtained. This process is both expensive and slow. But it is not so with the
2
digital camera. It stores images in digital form as can be downloaded to a
computer system and can be used in it.

d) CD/DVD

CD and DVD are storage media. CDs are composed of a polycarbonate plastic
substrate, a thin reflective metal coating, and a protective outer coating. CDs
vary in their data storage capacity. 74 minutes/650 MB, 80 minutes/700 MB
(12 cm), and 21 minute/185 MB (8 cm) discs are available in the market. You
can run a CD in a CD-ROM.

A DVD is somewhat similar to a CD in composition. It can store data more than

a CD can. A DVD has a storage capacity of usually 4.1 GB. These DVDs are one
layered. There is also an 8.54-GB dual-layer version, called DVD-R DL. You can
run a DVD in a DVD-ROM drive. A DVD-ROM drive can play CDs as well.

e) Hard disk

The hard disk is also called hard disk drive (HDD) or hard drive. Hard disks,
these days, are a sealed unit. They have magnetic plates that store data. These
plates are called platters. Hard disks can be divided into two categories: the
internal hard disk drive and the external hard disk drive. The internal HDD is
fixed on the motherboard. It is the main storage device on your computer. It
stores all your data like files and folders, documents, music and video, and the
operating system and computer programs. When the internal drive does not
have any free space, external hard disk drives are used to store more data.
They can be connected to a computer by USB. Several additional hard drives
can be connected to each other at the same time. Hard disks available in the
market have a memory range from 20GB to 1000GB. However, there are hard
disks with a storage capacity of even 2TB (terabytes), which is equal to
2000GB.

f) USB Flash memory

USB flash memory storage device is portable and rewritable drive. It is very
small in size, but can store large amounts of data– in most cases, more than
CDs or DVDs. It can be carried around on a key chain. This type of a secondary
storage device has become incredibly popular. Data can be easily read using
the USB (Universal Serial Bus) interface. This interface now comes standard
with most of the computers. The flash drives easily available in the market

3
usually have a storage capacity ranging from 4 GB to 64GB. The highest storage
of the USB is 256 GB.

g) Monitor
The monitor is a TV-like box. It displays the results of your work on its screen.
This screen is called display screen. Now LCD monitors are also available in the
market for the same purpose.

Unit 6

Exercise
A. Answer the following questions.

1. How is LAN different from a WAN? Into which category would you place
the Internet?
Ans. LAN is the most common type of computer network. It is a group of
computers linked together through cables. It can work in an area limited
to a few kilometers. You can create a LAN in a single room or in a
building whereas WAN communicates over long distances. These
computers send data over telephone system or wireless medium often
by way of satellite.
Internet is a type of WAN.
2. Write five uses of the Internet.
Ans. We use Internet for
i. sharing information
ii. education
iii. shopping
iv. entertainment
v. communication
3. What is the role of a Modem as a requirement for the Internet?
Ans. A Modem is a device that enables a computer to transmit data over
telephone or cable lines. Computer information is stored digitally;
information transmitted over telephone lines is transmitted in the form
of analog waves. A modem converts between these two forms.
4. What is a web address? Define different parts of it.
Ans. Each website is a collection of one or more pages, usually of the
same type. The documents or pages are accessible through a URL
(Uniform Resource Locator). This URL is also called the web/website
address. A web address usually looks like this:
http://www.google.com.pk
