The National Association of Black Social Workers, Inc., comprised of people of African ancestry, is committed to enhancing the quality of life and empowering people of African ancestry through advocacy, human services delivery, and research. The National Association of Black Social Workers, Inc. will work to create a world in which people of African ancestry will live free from racial domination, economic exploitation and cultural oppression. In collaboration with national, international and other appropriate groups, NABSW will continue to leverage its collective expertise to strategically develop the capacity of people of African ancestry to sustain and flourish. NABSWs vision is guided by the Principles of the Nguzo Saba, which are Unity, Self-determination, Collective Work and Responsibility, Cooperative Economics, Purpose, Creativity, and Faith, and the Seven Cardinal Virtues of Maat, which are Right, Truth, Justice, Order, Reciprocity, Balance, and Harmony.
Hotep Family! Seasons Greetings to you all during this whimsical, wonderful, and busy time of year! I pray that each of you is in good health, spirits, and resting well from finals for a few weeks! We have been busy planning for the NABSWs 44th Annual Conference, which will be held in Atlanta, GA from April 3-April 6, 2012. The OSA Conference committee has been working diligently with the National Conference committee as well as the Atlanta local chapters to plan for a fantastic conference for you! We would LOVE to see each of you there, so I hope your student chapters are working hard at making plans to get there! We encourage each of you to pre-register early and take advantage of the reduced rates for both early registration, and students. This year, in accordance with the theme of this OSA administration: Taking Hold of Our Own Destiny, we encourage you all to get involved at conference. As a student, there are many ways to get involved. We encourage you to sign up to volunteer for OSA during the conference as well as to participate in OSA scheduled activities such as the OSA Day of Service, OSA Symposium, and our annual OSA party. Our OSA 1st Vice President Glenda Duru will keep you informed with the latest information in regards to the conference. For more information about the conference checkout the national website at www.nabsw.org, OSA blog spot, and Facebook webpage. Another fantastic way to get involved is by preparing a poster presentation. For the first time, OSA is sponsoring student presentations at our annual OSA luncheon. This YOUR opportunity to show off all that you do in your schools, communities, chapters, and research! Please consider presenting! Proposal forms will soon be posted on the OSA blog spot as well as the link to them on Facebook page so please check back for them. Also, please take an opportunity to engage in the OSA fundraising initiatives presented by the national officers of OSA, as ALL funds raised directly go toward financially supporting OSA conference activities. The next Chapter Presidents conference call will be held on Sunday, January 8, 2012 at 4 oclock pm CST. Dial in information will be posted to the BlogSpot as well as Facebook, and an agenda will be sent to those who RSVP for the call. Please continue communicating and sharing your ideas with us through Facebook and at www.nabswstudentaffairs.blogspot.com. Let us all continue pulling together in the spirit and joy of Harambee! I look forward to seeing you all in Atlanta! Peace and Blessings,
Tajsheena Leggs, BA
As you enjoy winter break and prepare for the spring semester, I hope your days are filled with peace. Here is something to keep in mind as you complete your holiday shopping and tackle New Years Resolutions and task list. African Americans account for 12.6 % of the US population (according to the 2010 U.S. Census) and account for over 913 billion in spending yearly. Major corporations have spent over 1.9 billion dollars advertising in black communities. Proctor & Gamble, LOreal, Johnson & Johnson, General Motors, and McDonalds top the list. In order for our money to impact the black community, it has to exchange hands 7 times. So whether you are making everyday purchases, major purchases or preparing for OSA fundraisers, think about our community and the impact of spending your dollars with African American owned businesses and the economic impact suffered in our communities if you dont. So as our government continues to debate the budget, where dollars should be

spent and what programs will be cut, I ask you, who will your dollars benefit? Asante Sana (Thank You),

Randryia co-found The Pencil Project after visiting Ghana and noticing the need for pencils in the public school system. Randryia stated, As a social work student, the opportunity to travel to Ghana enables me to indulge in both my passions: making a tangible impact in a disparate community and my love of culture. I am grateful for the opportunity the African American Studies Department at the University of Houston has afforded me and for the unwavering support of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and the Graduate College of Social Work. Lets Support our fellow member passion and donate to this great cause!
