Karnataka board English Solved Paper 2017

General Instructions:
i) The Question-cum-Answer Booklet consists of objective and subjective types of questions
having 63 questions.
ii) Space has been provided against each objective type question. You have to choose the correct
choice and write the complete answer along with its letter in the space provided.
iii) For subjective type questions enough space for each question has been provided. You have to
answer the questions in the space.
iv) Follow the instructions given against both the objective and subjective types of questions.
v) Candidate should not write the answer with pencil. Answers written in pencil will not be
evaluated. (Except Graphs, Diagrams & Maps)
vi) In case of Multiple Choice, Fill in the blanks and Matching questions, scratching / rewriting /
marking is not permitted, thereby rendering to disqualification for evaluation.
vii) Candidates have extra 15 minutes for reading the question paper.
viii) Do not write anything in the space provided in the right side margin.

Prose
I. Four alternatives are given for each of the following questions/ incomplete statements. Only
one of them is correct or most appropriate. Choose the correct alternative and write the complete

II. Answer the following questions in 2- 3 sentence each: 4×2=8


4. Why did Swami’s father want him to sleep alone in the office room?
Answer: The report in the newspaper led to an argument between Swami and his father. Later,
Swami was challenged by his father to sleep alone in his office room. Swami’s father wanted
Swami to sleep alone in his office room because, he wanted him not to be afraid of darkness and
to prove his courage. Thus, would culture a good habit in him.
5. Though Swami was not courageous, he became a hero overnight. How?
Answer: The report in the newspaper led to an argument between Swami and his father. Later,
Swami was challenged by his father to sleep alone in his office room. But, Swami was not
willing to sleep alone in the office room. He gave many excuses to his father to escape from his
father but all his attempts failed. When he was sleeping in the office room he was waked with
nightmare and would not sleep all night. He saw something coming near him, he thought it might
be a devil and crawled out of the bench. He gathered all his strength and caught it & used his
teeth as a weapon. To his surprise it was a notorious burglar of the village and Swami became a
hero overnight.
6. Don Anselmo was passionate about his land and the children of Rio- en – Medio. Support this
statement with your answer.
Answer: Don Anselmo was passionate about his land and the children of Rio-en-Medio. He was
a man of the principle. Don Anselmo refused to take additional amount and he didn’t sell the
trees which were grown on his orchard. He used to plant the trees when a child is born in Rio-en-
Medio. Even though he got to know that he owned the land he didn’t took the additional amount.
From the above sentences we can say that Don-en-Medio was passionate about his land and the
children of the Rio-en-Medio.
7. Scientists are the most practical people in the world. Justify the statement.

Answer: The fundamental research has been brought in new technologies, new brands of the
industries from the defense to the entertainment. Antibodies, Bio-technology, Electronics,
technologies etc. are the result of the past research. There is a strong defense force, medicines
cure for diseases etc. From all the above we can say that scientist are the most practical people of
the world. The scientists who conduct basic research have helped a lot to make preparedness that
occur from the natural calamities.

III. Read the following extracts and answer the questions that follows: 3×3=9

11. Give some instances to show that Pepe was loyal to Columbus till the end.

How can you say that Satish became popular all over the world?
Answer: (a) Pepe was loyal to Columbus till the end. Pepe had the faith in Columbus and has the
same wisdom as Columbus. When the sailors planned to kill the Columbus, he (Pepe) told that
the sailors would not kill the Columbus as he would not allow them to attack Columbus, he
would protect the Columbus. But the sailors didn’t have the hope on Columbus that he would
accomplish his mission.
The sailors were distracted by the routes taken by his captain. They were frustrated a lot
and began to drink more to drown their frustration. But the Columbus didn’t like the sailors been
drinking and song sang by him. As he was a religious person. Added to this the song..the God.
Till the end Pepe was with the Columbus, he supported him and also helped for the voyage.

the life should be enjoyed by as cheerful and and merry making. He should laugh for two reasons
the first is the life is short & the second reason is that we should be proud that we belong to a old
pageant of man.
14. According to the poet ‘Normal Nicholson’ outer space is solitary confinement for him. Why?
Answer: The poet feels alone in the space craft. He could not contact any of his friends and there
will be no mails or messages from his known ones. So, he feels loneliness in the space craft and
he said it a solitary confinement which he has compared to the goal [Jail]. There will be no
concept of calendars or the time and the climate will be under the clock etc so he feels solitary
confinement.

story of defeats. It is the story of the conquerors of the world. Your Vedic Scriptures are not the
songs of cowherds. They are the immortal truths which shaped mighty souls like Sri Rama and
Sri Krishna. Arise, awake, and be proud of your glorious history. Take inspiration from it to
mould the present. Shame upon the modern education which fills you with contempt for your
ancestors!"
