M. Read the student’s essay. Circle True or False for each statement. (20 points each)

My Dream World

Let’s imagine a clean new world, a world where there’s almost no trash. How would that happen? I see
five things that might make our world a better place to live.

1. People recycle everything they use. If something can’t be recycled, no one buys it. All the trash cans
in towns and cities are almost empty. If a child drops a piece of trash, several people run to pick it up. If
the streets are beautifully neat and clean, they will stay neat and clean.

2. The air everywhere is healthy, clean, and fresh. There’s very little smoke in the sky because there are
very few factories. People are happy and healthy. Animals and plants are also healthy because the land is
clean and green again.

3. When people build new houses, they use wood, not concrete. A lot of the houses are in open green
spaces where kids can play safely and adults can exercise.

4. There are almost no traffic jams ever because almost all of the people who live here travel by bike or
on foot. If someone wants to own a car, they buy a small car that doesn’t pollute. These cars work with
electricity so they don’t drive noisily along the highways anymore. It’s not possible to drive dangerously
because the cars drive themselves. There are no more accidents.

5. And how about crime? Can people live calmly and safely in this perfect world? Yes, they can.
Everybody speaks politely and kindly, and there are very few problems in the community. There is a
little graffiti, but that’s because there’s a special place for graffiti artists to paint and draw. People enjoy
seeing the new pieces of art.

My dream world isn’t the world that we live in now. Most of our streets have trash on them, and the air
in a lot of the world is dangerous to breathe. More and more cars fill our streets and highways. And
crime is something many people worry about. Still, I believe that my dream world is possible. All the
ingredients of my dream world have already appeared – if not in daily life, then at least in the laboratory.
We just need to work together, and we can have a much better world sooner than most people imagine.
