D. Abstraction
Our lesson this morning will be about how a
selection may be influenced by culture, history, and
the environment.

Your objectives this morning are the following:

1. Discover by analyzing how culture, history, and
environment may influence a literary piece.
2. Express ideas and beliefs about the material
read.
3. Appreciate the uniqueness of the Filipino’s
identity.

Now, let us begin with Culture. Culture has been

called "the way of life for an entire society." It
includes codes of manners, dress, language,
religion, rituals, norms of behavior such as law and
morality, and belief systems.

“We Filipinos tend to believe in superstition or “Yes, sir, I believe in superstitions. One example is that
pamahiin. Do you believe in superstitions class? you cannot cut your nails at night.”
(Students answer may vary.)
“Great job, that is one example of our superstition
as Filipinos. Here are other examples.”
One example on how culture may influence a
selection is the story “The Longest Christmas
Celebration in the World” by I.V. Mallari.

Summary:
The author discussed the unique way the
Philippines and Filipinos celebrate the Christmas
season. It’s noted for being the longest Christmas
celebration globally, extending from September
until January 6th, which includes the traditional
observance of the Feast of the Three Kings.

Author’s background:
Ismael Villanueva Mallari was one of the early
Filipino writers in English. He was primarily an
essayist. He is ranked as the leading literary and art
critic in the Philippines and his works focuses more
on Filipino traditions and values.

Now let’s proceed to History, History is the study of

the past. History provides us with a sense
of identity. By understanding where we have come
from, we can better understand who we
are. History provides a sense of context for our
lives and our existence.

“Throughout history, the Philippines has been

colonized by three different nations. Can you name
one of those nations?”
Students answer:
The first country to colonize our country is Spain.

Second is United States of America.

The third and the last one is Japan.

Excellent! All of your answers are correct. Those
were the nations that occupied our country in the
past.

One example on how history may influence a

selection is the story “March of Death” by
Bienvenido N. Santos.

Summary:
The story summarizes the suffering of many
Filipinos in Bataan Death March by the time of
Japanese occupation.

Author’s background:
Bienvenido N. Santos is a scholar of the Philippine
Commonwealth government. The effects of crisis
changed the nature of his writing into a less
carefree style to mixing laughter and pain.

Now let’s proceed to the third one which is the

environment. An environment is a place where
different things, living or non-living, constantly
interact with and adapt to conditions in their
environment. The environment can influence
peoples’ behavior, mood, and motivation to act.

“Have you noticed something when Filipinos go

abroad and stay in that particular place for a long
time?” “They are being influenced by the language, tradition,
and culture of the place they are staying.”
“Correct! Very good observation.” (Students answer may vary.)

One example on how environment may influence a

selection is the story “New Yorker in Tondo by
Marcelino Agana Jr.

Summary:
The story is about a girl who grew in Tondo and
went to New York City for a year. She changed
everything about her, the way she dressed, talked
and mingled with others.
Author’s background:
Marcelino Agana Jr. was a playwright in 1958 who
wrote one of the more popular Filipino comedies
that have been produced many times through the
years.

“Do you have any questions class?”

“Okay, if there are no questions, let’s have a short “None at the moment sir.”
recap of our lesson this morning. What are the
three major factors that may influence a
selection?” “The three factors that may influence a selection are
culture, history, and the environment.”
“Great job! It simply means that you are always
paying attention to our lesson.”

E. Application
Group Task (Lights, Camera, Action!)
The students will create a scenario based on the
poem that will be posted on the board. The class
will be divided into three groups. The students
have the liberty to create a scenario based on the (The students do as told.)
ideas they come up with after reading the poem.

The Mark of a true Filipino

I was once asked by a foreigner

To describe my beloved country
Hark, listen very carefully
To my true and faithful description.

If by chance I have seen

Unfurled and flying, high above the air
The most beautiful flag of red, white and blue
Symbol of my country, we give honor.

Once our national anthem is played

And by chance I hear its music drifting in the wind
Place your right hand over your breast
While its lively music is being played.
Our national costumes, Barong Tagalog and & Baro
at Saya
And our national flower, the Sampaguita
Our folk songs, our national tree Narra
And the Philippine Eagle
All these are our national symbols.

Should anybody make fun

Of the color of your skin
Be proud, don’t be ashamed
Hold your head high, it is God given.

Our heroes never feared

To shed their blood and give their life
For freedom most revered
They’re our pride let us not forget them.

“How was the activity class?”

“That is good to hear; based on the scenarios

portrayed by each group, it simply shows that you “The activity was fun and full of excitement!”
are really proud of being a Filipino.”
