CHAPTER 01

Introduction
Morocco among the slowest-growing nations in Africa
Country in a Nutshell

Morocco currently at an inflection point

Even though Morocco has made a concerted effort to diversify its primarily agrarian
economy into one with industrial manufacturing, the economy has not progressed
much. In fact, the sub-Saharan African country’s real GDP slowed to a mere 2.7% in
2019, with a 3.4% increase in non-agricultural growth being the only positive trend.
This slowdown is primarily caused by the volatile and drought-prone agricultural
sector, tepid growth in the country’s tertiary sector, and weak performance in the
area of exports. However, the future appears more promising thanks to increased
foreign investments, especially in the automotive industry, and the developing
export of electronics, chemicals, and of course automobiles. The economy
contracted by 6.3% in 2020 but has recovered at around 5% in 2021.

• Continuing subsidies such as LPG and infrastructure spending will keep public
expenditures high

• The government is focusing on private sector development to address

unemployment

Insights into the grocery structure and shopping behavior in Morocco
Retail Structure: National Typic Grocery Structure

Insights into a national typic grocery structure

The grocery market in Morocco is characterized by hypermarkets, convenience

stores, discounters and handcarts.

In Morocco, the specific characteristics of grocery shopping can change from one
place to another. In big cities, most people go to supermarket every Sunday to buy
their weekly groceries and whatever else they need. Many of the larger
supermarkets offer discounts for groceries bought in bulk.

In rural areas or small towns, people may need to plan their grocery shopping
ahead of time, since large supermarkets are not readily accessible. Due to this fact,
consumers tend to do the shopping to fulfill their daily needs in small regional
shops. Furthermore, many people like to buy their groceries on street markets as
well.

The PM2.5 exposure in Morocco for

the average population is 35.0

The country ranks #179 in a

comparison of 230 countries covered

• PM2.5 are fine liquid or solid particles,

such as dust or smog, which are
found in the air. "2.5" refers to its size
which is <2.5 microns in diameter. As
a comparison, human hair is 50-70
microns in diameter

• PM2.5 is the air pollutant that poses

the greatest risk to health according
