Urban Environments:

Millionaire city: 1 million inhabitants

Megacity: 10 million inhabitants

Global city: most commonly defined as the command and control centres of the global
economy

Developed - emerging - developing

Conurbation: The phenomenon of when neighbouring towns and cities merge together into
one vast urban area

CBD: Central Business District

Causes of rapid urbanisation:


1.
- Population growth
- Pull factors(attract people to city) - Access to health care, job options
- Push factors(repel people from rural areas) - Fewer jobs available

- Economic development - when a country industrialises, people move from primary to
secondary(later tertiary sectors)

- Potential Available urban zones nearby - Places which have been undiscovered are
eventually turned into a town or village (possibly become a city later on(london,
Swansea, Edinburgh, Cardiff, París, New york)

Relationship between poverty and urbanisation:

1. Cause: lack of opportunities in rural areas, lack of resources and services


2. Effect: increased urbanisation - increased poverty, overcrowding, unemployment,
housing shortages or unaffordable housing $$$ = creation of slums

Danger/Challenges of Urbanisation:
- Health(pollution, congestion)
- Inequality - wealth disparity
- Sustainability - environmental impact

Benefits/Opportunities:
- “Connectivity”
- Building a global connected network - promotes peace and prevents war,
opportunities for trade & economic growth on a national/international level
- Economic growth/economic power
- Innovations - solutions to global issues(climate change)

Squatter settlement - slums “illegal housing”:

- Disease prone - waterborne illnesses, infectious disease, vector-borne (mosquitoes)


- Poor transportation
- Weak buildings
- No waste disposal / no sewage system
- Poorly equipped health care
- Crowded
