(Any 5)

Global Warming is a term almost everyone is familiar with. But, its meaning is still not clear
to most of us. So, Global warming refers to the gradual rise in the overall temperature of the
atmosphere of the Earth. There are various activities taking place which have been increasing
the temperature gradually. Global warming is melting our ice glaciers rapidly. This is
extremely harmful to the earth as well as humans. It is quite challenging to control global
warming; however, it is not unmanageable. The first step in solving any problem is
identifying the cause of the problem. Therefore, we need to first understand the causes of
global warming that will help us in solving it.

Global warming has become a grave problem which needs attention. It is happening because
of several causes. These causes are both natural as well as manmade. The natural causes
include the release of greenhouses gases which are not able to escape from earth, causing the
temperature to increase. Further, volcanic eruptions are also responsible for global warming.
That is to say, these eruptions release tons of carbon dioxide which contributes to global
warming. Similarly, methane is also an issue responsible for global warming. After that, the
excessive use of vehicles also results in increased levels of carbon dioxide. One of the most
common cause of global warming is rapid deforestation.
Global warming can be stopped when combined efforts are put in. We must begin with the
reduction of greenhouse gas. Furthermore, we should switch to a hybrid car and reduce the
release of carbon dioxide. Moreover, citizens can choose public transport or carpool together.
Subsequently, recycling must also be encouraged.

For instance, when we go shopping, carry our own cloth bag. Another step we can take is to
limit the use of electricity which will prevent the release of carbon dioxide. On the
government’s part, they must regulate industrial waste and ban them from emitting harmful
gases in the air. Deforestation must be stopped immediately and planting of trees must be
encouraged.

Read the passage given below carefully and answer the questions that follow:-

Once upon a time, in a peaceful pond, there was a family of ducks. The mother duck had just
hatched a new brood of ducklings. They were all beautiful, soft, and fluffy and their feathers
were vibrant yellow, except for one duckling that looked different from its siblings as it had
dull gray feathers.
Feeling out of place, the duckling was often laughed at and teased by the other animals and
was not loved by anyone. As winter arrived, the pond froze, and the ugly duckling struggled
to find food and warmth, feeling lonelier each day.
One day, while wandering, the duckling met a group of graceful swans. The duckling was
surprised at their beauty, feeling a mix of admiration and sadness. It wanted to be as elegant
as those swans, but deep down, it believed it could never belong with such majestic creatures.
To its surprise, the swans noticed the lonely duckling and they welcomed the duckling. To its
surprise, it saw its reflection in the water had changed, the once dull gray feathers had
transformed into a stunning coat of white – the duckling had become a beautiful swan. At that
moment, the ugly duckling realized it was never an ugly duckling at all – it was a beautiful
swan.

you’re unique and special, the Ugly Duckling discovered that everyone grows and changes
with time, therefore, there is no need to focus on appearance.

are so tasty and cost only a dollar! We also come here because it's a good place to sit and
chat!"

fat drinking too much has the same effect. In summer it's so easy to drink too much. In
America people drink lots of soda pop, such as colas and 7UP. The reason is simple. They are

EXERCISE 8

"The Strength of Words: Why Writing Beats Fighting"

People say that words are more powerful than actions. This is what "The pen is mightier than
the sword" means.

The pen represents the power of words and language. It symbolizes the ability to share
thoughts, ideas, and emotions. Think about pens. They're just tools for writing, but they hold
so much power. With a pen, you can tell stories, convince others, a judge’s pen can punish
others, or some writings can make them feel things. Writing lets people express themselves,
stand up against unfairness, and inspire others.
In contrast, the sword shows physical force and violence. Think about swords. They're
weapons used for fighting. Sure, they can win battles, but the changes they make don't last
long. Violence often leads to more violence. While fighting can bring temporary change, it
often fails to address the real issues and doesn't create lasting transformation.

Words are different. They can last forever, crossing borders and bringing people together.
Whether it's in a book or a speech, words can change how we see the world. Words have the
power to spark revolutions, bring about social change, and challenge oppressive systems.
They can inspire action and fight for justice.

Think about books like "To Kill a Mockingbird" or speeches by leaders like Nelson Mandela.
They've made people think and stand up for what's right.

So, while swords might win fights, it's words that really change things. Let's use our words
wisely to make the world better for everyone.

1) What's the main idea of the passage?

a) Fighting is better than talking.
b) Violence is the only solution.
c) Words are strong and can make things better.
d) Swords and pens are the same.

2) What does the pen represent?

a) Fighting
b) Words and language
c) Temporary changes
d) None of the above

3) What can writing do?

a) It's not very strong.
b) It can share thoughts and ideas.
c) It's only for punishment.
d) It can't do much.

4) What can words do that fighting can't?

a) Make things worse.
b) Solve problems peacefully.
c) Cause more fighting.
d) They can't do anything.

5) What's an example of words being powerful?

a) Using swords in battles.
b) Using force to solve problems.
c) Books and speeches by important people.
d) d) The effects of violence on society.
