Q1. What is Attitude?
Attitude is defined by Merriam-Webster as “a mental position or feeling
with regard to something proposed or something believed,” and in
regards to a person’s character means “foreseen likelihood of success.”
Attitudes are defined by Dictionary.com as “a feeling of liking for or
tendency toward a person, object, or action.” I think it is safe to say that
both of these definitions are very broad and can be taken into many
directions.

I believe that attitude has the power to affect one’s work ethic
tremendously; however, I also believe that having a good work ethic can
influence your attitude in a good way. A good, working attitude comes
when you are confident in the work that needs to be done and believe
that you will accomplish it successfully. Thus, it is safe to say that one’s
work ethic influences their attitude greatly; however, I also think that an
individual with a bad attitude can still do well and be successful.

A good example of this is someone who used to not like their job or career
path, but then decides that they want to try much harder and change
that. This turning back around can affect their attitude greatly as well as
make them more confident in what they do. Eventually, the individual
may even come to enjoy what they do, but only because they worked
hard to change their attitude about it.

On the other hand, if someone has a good work ethic and does well in
what they do but is surrounded by people with bad attitudes, then their
own positive work ethic can be influenced negatively. If this person had an
understanding of how important it was to have a good attitude, then they
could prevent their work ethic from deteriorating by leaving these people
behind. Just like having a good work ethic can influence one’s attitude
positively, so too can it be influenced negatively if someone allows
themselves to be surrounded by the negativity of others.

Attitude and work ethic are two extremely important qualities that should
not be separated; instead, they should be treated as one. Work ethic is
very important to have, but it will not help you if you are around others
who only bring you down. Likewise, attitude can affect your work ethic
more than anything else; however, you need a strong work ethic in order
to make the most of your attitude.

A study by the University of Notre Dame on career success suggests that

“leadership ability, energy, and having a strong work ethic were the
essential predictors for success.” These three things are qualities that
easily boost one’s career or new jobs in almost any field.

Since having a good work ethic and a positive attitude is key for one’s
career or new jobs, it can be said that both qualities are essential for
success. Attitude is defined by Dictionary.com as “a tendency of
temperament or outlook; disposition.” Therefore, your outlook and
tendencies could affect how well you do in the future because your
attitude is important in regards to work ethic.

In other words, having a good work ethic and attitude are each essential
for advancing yourself in any field or job. Having both of these things can
help you succeed, but if your surrounding group does not have one or the
other, then their lack of either quality could be detrimental to your own
success as well as that of others.

According to Gordon Allport, “An attitude is a mental and neural state of

readiness, organized through experience, exerting a directive or dynamic
influence upon the individual’s response to all objects and situations with
which it is related.”

Q2. Components of Attitude:
. Cognitive Component:
The cognitive component of attitudes refers to the beliefs, thoughts, and
attributes that we would associate with an object. It is the opinion or belief
segment of an attitude. It refers to that part of the attitude that is related
to the general knowledge of a person.

Typically, these come to light in generalities or stereotypes, such as ‘all

babies are cute’, ‘smoking is harmful to health, etc.

. Affective Component:
The affective component is the emotional or feeling segment of an
attitude.

It is related to the statement which affects another person.

It deals with feelings or emotions that are brought to the surface about
something, such as fear or hate. Using the above example, someone
might have the attitude that they love all babies because they are cute or
that they hate smoking because it harms health.

. Behavioral Component:
The behavior component of an attitude consists of a person’s tendencies
to behave in a particular way toward an object. It refers to that part of
attitude that reflects the intention of a person in the short-run or long run.

Using the above example, the behavioral attitude may be ‘I cannot wait to
kiss the baby,’ or ‘we better keep those smokers out of the library, etc.

Q3. Positive Attitude versus Negative Attitude:

A positive thinker has many advantages over those with a negative
mindset. Their positive energy will attract others, making working
relationships with colleagues easier and encouraging teamwork. Those
who are good at positive self-talk improve their self-confidence, in turn
improving their decision-making skills and their management abilities.
This is particularly important for someone hoping to climb the career
ladder.

Positive Attitude versus Negative Attitude “When one door of happiness

closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that
we do not see the one which has been opened for us.” — Helen Keller 2
Individuals with a positive attitude think that everything happens for a
reason and all that happens is for good whereas individuals with a
negative attitude think that it is the end of the road when things don’t fall
into place. Individuals with a positive attitude explore and extract
opportunities from threats whereas individuals with a negative attitude
explore and extract threats from opportunities. Individuals with a positive
attitude look at the rising sun whereas individuals with a negative attitude
look at the setting sun. Individuals with a positive attitude look at the
silver lining over the dark cloud whereas individuals with a negative
attitude look at the dark cloud. Individuals with a positive attitude are part
of the solutions, not the problems, whereas individuals with a negative
attitude are part of the problems, not the solutions. In a nutshell,
individuals with a positive attitude are optimistic with a growth mindset
whereas individuals with a negative attitude are pessimistic with a fixed
mindset. Individuals with a positive attitude are confident, optimistic,
tolerant, flexible, adaptable, responsible, reliable, and humble. In contrast,
individuals with a negative attitude are envious, and pessimistic, feel
inferior to others, and often spread hatred. The individuals with a neutral
attitude are disconnected, detached, indifferent, and unemotional. When
characterizing Roman leaders, Julius Caesar might be best described as
having a positive attitude; Caligula, a negative attitude; and Nero, a
neutral attitude.

Q4. IMPACT OF ATTITUDE IN THE WORKPLACE:

Your attitude is going to affect how you work. If you are negative, it is
going to be harder for you to stay focused and motivated. However, if you
have a positive attitude, you will be more likely to work harder and be
more productive.

Your attitude can also affect the way others perceive your work ethic. If
you are always positive and upbeat, people will likely think that you have
a strong work ethic. However, if you are always negative and complain
about everything, people will likely think that you do not have a good
work ethic.

A strong work ethic is essential for any employee. It shows that you are
willing to go above and beyond and are proactive. You are also more likely
to be successful if you have a good work ethic. Having a positive attitude
is also essential, as it will help you stay motivated and focused. If you can
combine these two qualities, you will be sure to succeed in your career.

Q6.How to build a positive attitude toward things:

Your mind is a powerful thing. If you allow yourself to keep a positive state
of mind, your attitude will follow.

There are many ways to develop a positive attitude. Here are a few to
help you get started.

Listen to your internal dialogue. When faced with a negative thought, turn
it around to make it into a positive thought. (For example, “I am no good
at this!” could be changed to, “Maybe this is not one of my strengths, but
I’ve tried my hardest, and I am skilled in many other things.”)
Interact within positive environments and with positive people. Do things
with people who positively reinforce you. Go places that have special
meanings and positive memories or associations.
Volunteer. Do something that will help others. This will give you a sense of
fulfillment and make you feel happy inside.
Get pleasure out of the simple things in life. Laughter is one of the most
powerful mood enhancers. Allow yourself to laugh.
Permit yourself to be loved. Everyone deserves to be loved. Everyone is
loved.
Your actions and reactions toward other individuals can determine the end
result of the interaction. For example, if you are receptive and respectful
to individuals’ opinions, they in return could be more open to what it is
you have to say.

Take responsibility for your actions, thoughts and feelings. No one can
make you feel any way that you do not want to feel.
