Question 3 [ 15 marks]

3.1 The system of equations

𝑑𝑥
= −6𝑥 + 6𝑥𝑦
𝑑𝑡
𝑑𝑦
= −2𝑦 + 4𝑥𝑦
𝑑𝑡

describes the influence of the populations (in thousands) of two competing species on their growth
rates.

3.1.1 Write a differential equation which gives the rate of change of 𝑦 with respect to 𝑥 [1]

3.1.2 Find an equation relating 𝑥 and 𝑦, assuming 𝑦 =1 when 𝑥 =1. [4]

3.1.3 Find values of 𝑥 and 𝑦 so that both the populations are constant. [2]

3.2 A tank contains 250 liters of a solution of dissolved salt and water, which is kept uniform
by stirring. Initially 15kg of salt is in the mixture. Pure water is allowed to flow into the tank
at the rate of 15 liters per minute, and the mixture flows out at the rate of 10 liters per
minute. Let 𝑦(𝑡) be the amount of salt and 𝑉(𝑡) be the volume of the mixture present in the
tank at any time 𝑡.
𝑑𝑉
3.2.1 Write a differential equation with an initial condition for , and then find 𝑉(𝑡) [4]
𝑑𝑡

𝑑𝑦
3.2.2 Set up , with an initial condition, a differential equation for which gives the rate of
𝑑𝑡
change of the amount of salt present in the tank with respect to time.

(DO NOT EVALUATE THE INTEGRAL) [4]

Question 4 [16 marks]

4.1.1 Find the Taylor polynomial of degree 4 for 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑒 5𝑥 at 𝑥 = 0 [5]

4.1.2 Using the above Taylor polynomial, approximate 𝑒 0.15 [2]

( Round your answer to 4 decimal places.)

4.2 Use the information below to answer the questions that follow:

1
= 1 + 𝑥 + 𝑥2 + 𝑥3 + ⋯ ⋯ + 𝑥𝑛 + ⋯ ⋯ if x is in the interval (-1,1)
1−𝑥

4
Find the Taylor series for the function 𝑓(𝑥) = 1−𝑥 3 and give the interval of convergence.
[6]

4.3 Consider the geometric Series

35 7 7 7
+ 200 + 4000 + 80000 + ⋯ ⋯ ⋯ ⋯
50

Determine if this series converges or diverges. Find the sum of the series if it converges. [3]
