What Muslims believe about Allah (God)

 Allah’s existence cannot be proved.


 Allah is the creator of everything.
 There are no other gods.
 Only Allah may be worshipped and praised.
 Allah has 99 beautiful names.
 All the names are found in the Qur’an (Holy Book of Islam).
 Allah will judge all people according to their deeds on earth.

Muhammad (Peace be upon him)


Muhammad is regarded by Muslims as the last prophet of God. Muhammad’s life and
teaching is very important for Muslims as an example of how to live a perfect Muslim
life.
 Muhammad was born in 570 CE (Common Era).
 His father died before he was born, his mother died when he was
aged 6.
 Eventually he was brought up by an uncle.
 First he worked as a shepherd.
 He was very honest and his uncle let him go on business journeys.
 He impressed Khadijah and she let him run her business.
 He married her when he was 25.

The Qur’an
 Qur’an means ‘recitation’
 The Qur’an was revealed to Muhammad by God through his angel
Gabriel.
 It was revealed gradually over 23 years.
 It is the Word of Allah.
 Various people wrote parts down.
 It was checked by those who had heard it directly from Muhammad.
 It is Allah’s final revelation to humans.

The Five Pillars of Islam


 Shahada: Faith in Allah and the belief that Muhammad was his messenger.
 Zakah: Alms giving is a form of tax to help the poor.
 Salah: Prayer five times a day and at the mosque.
 Sawm: Fasting performed during daylight hours in the month of Ramadan.
 Hajj: Pilgrimage to Makkah.

Qur’an used in worship
 It is given great respect.
 When not in used it must be kept wrapped up.
 It is placed on a high shelf to keep it safe and clean.
 Everyone must wash before reading it.
 It should be read every day.
 It should be obeyed.
Layout of a typical mosque (place of worship)
 There is a tower or minaret for the muezzin (person who calls people
to prayer).
 There are wash rooms for special washing.
 In the prayer room there is a niche or mihrab which indicates the
direction to Makkah.
 Mosques have cloakrooms for shoes.
 There are separate areas for men and women.
 There must be no pictures.

Family life: Children’s attitude to parents


 Children must respect parents.
 Children must be obedient to their parents and older relatives.
 No child should cause harm to his or her parents.
 In old age parents may need to be supported by children.
 This duty continues until parents’ deaths.

Muslim Festivals
Id-ul-Fitr
 The festival was started by Muhammad (pbuh).
 It marks the end of Ramadan.
 It is also a time to thank God for the Qu’ran.
 Many give a special Ramadan zakat or gift of money for the poor.
 Children are given presents.
 A special midday meal is eaten.
 It is also a special time to go to the mosque to pray.
Id-ul-Adha
 The festival takes place towards the end of the hajj.
 It is also celebrated by those not on the hajj.
 Id-ul-Adha celebrates the time when Abraham was ready to sacrifice Ismael.
 Abraham was willing to make this sacrifice because God commanded it.
 He resisted the temptations of the devil not to sacrifice Ishmael.
 This shows that Muslims must be ready to sacrifice their lives for God.
 The festival begins with prayers at the mosque.
 An animal is sacrificed to commemorate Abraham’s sacrifice of an animal.
 The meat is shared with friends, relatives and the poor.
