CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION OF THE STUDY

This chapter provides a quantitative overview of the research titled "The Relationship between Extra

and Co-curricular Activities and its Impact on Academic Performance of Selected Grade 9 Sapphire

Students of Minsulao National High School, School year 2023-2024." It outlines the background,

problem statement, theoretical framework, conceptual framework, significance, assumptions, scope,

limitations, and definitions of terms pertinent to the study.

1.1 Background of the study

The active engagement of students in extracurricular activities has been widely recognized for its

positive influence on academic performance. Studies by Fredricks (2011) and Blomfield & Barber

(2009) indicate that over 80% of young individuals participate in such activities, which have been

linked to improved academic outcomes, including higher grades and test scores (Fredricks, 2011;

Lipscomb, 2007). Moreover, involvement in extracurricular activities has been associated with a

10% increase in the likelihood of obtaining a tertiary qualification (Lipscomb, 2007).

Structured extracurricular activities are known to facilitate the development of skills such as

following instructions, perseverance, self-motivation, goal setting, and problem-solving

(Wormington et al., 2012). These skills have been observed to positively impact academic success

(Fredricks, 2011). Additionally, the nature of the activity engaged in can influence academic

achievement, with participation in athletic clubs, arts and crafts, and academic organizations each

demonstrating varying degrees of impact (Lipscomb, 2007; Shulruf et al., 2007; Metsapelto &

Pulkkinen, 2011; Shulruf, 2010).

Research indicates that adolescents allocate a significant portion of their time to extracurricular

activities, with implications for their future prospects (Eccles, 2003). However, excessive

involvement may lead to undue stress and negative outcomes (Eccles, 2003). Understanding the

impact of extracurricular activities on students' academic performance and future prospects is

essential for educators, counselors, and parents in guiding students towards balanced participation

(Eccles, 2003).

This study aims to quantitatively explore the relationship between extracurricular activity

participation and academic performance, with a focus on understanding how various types of

activities influence student outcomes. By conducting quantitative analysis, this research seeks to

provide empirical evidence to inform stakeholders about the significance of extracurricular

involvement in shaping student's academic trajectories and future opportunities.

1.2 Statement of the problem

This quantitative study aims to investigate The relationship between extracurricular and co-curricular

activities and their impact on academic performance of Selected Grade 9 Sapphire Students of

Minsulao National High School.Specifically, the research seeks to quantify the extent to which

participation in these activities influences students' academic outcomes, including grades, test scores,

and overall educational achievement.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS:

1. How does participation in extracurricular activities correlate with academic

performance among students?

2. To what extent do specific types of extracurricular activities (e.g.,

sports,arts,academicclubs)affect academic achievement?

1.8 Definition of Terms

Extracurricular Activities. Extracurricular activities refer to activities or experiences outside the

regular academic curriculum that students engage in voluntarily. These activities can include sports,

clubs, volunteer work, arts programs, and other pursuits that complement students' academic

learning.

Co-curricular Activities: Co-curricular activities are activities that are designed to complement or

enhance the academic curriculum. These activities are usually organized within the school and may

include academic competitions, workshops, field trips, seminars, and other activities that provide

students with opportunities for hands-on learning and skill development.

Academic Performance. Academic performance refers to students' achievements in their academic

pursuits, including their grades, test scores, attendance records, and overall engagement in learning

activities. It is an indicator of how well students are meeting the academic standards and expectations

set by their school or educational institution.

Grade 9 Sapphire Students. Grade 9 Sapphire students are a specific group of students who are

enrolled in the ninth grade at Minsulao National High School and belong to the Sapphire class or

cohort. This designation may indicate that they are part of a specialized program, track, or group

within the school.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND RELATED STUDIES

This chapter present the Review of Related Literature and studies which have similarities with the

study. This information could gives ideas to the readers why the study is conducted

2.1 Review of related literature

Activities

The concept of activity is regarded as a conceptual entity that encompasses various manifestations of

human behavior. It can be construed as a construct that has applicability in the context of specific

environmental factors (Farbstein, 2014).

Co-curricular Activities

Co-curricular activities are defined as programs or activities that occur outside of the conventional

classroom environment, which serve as a supplement to academic learning derived from the

conventional curriculum of the classroom. The aforementioned activities lack grading and preclude

the chance of attaining academic credits. Nevertheless, they present numerous opportunities to foster

academic growth and enhance skill development amongst students (Levitas, 2022).

Learner's
An individual who endeavors to acquire knowledge or expertise in a particular subject matter

through purposeful study, practical application, or formal education (Wikipedia, 2023).

A student offers some insights into the consequences of participation on other significant student

outcomes, according to Zehner (2011) in his research regarding "Co-curricular activities and student

outcomes". We examine the differences in academic achievement between kids who participate

substantially in extracurricular activities. According to the analysis, the academic achievement of the

highly involved pupils is comparable to that of other students. Their extracurricular activity time has

no discernible impact on their academic performance

As per the research conducted by Kariyan, Maphosa, & Mapuranga (2012), "The Influence of

Learner's participation in school Co-curricular activities on Academic Performance" revealed that

teachers had favourable opinions regarding students' involvement in co-curricular activities because

they believed it would benefit them numerously. Teachers also believed that values taught through

extracurricular activities had a significant impact on students' academic achievement. Additionally,

the study found that participation in extracurricular activities did not always equate to academic

performance.

Extracurricular activities are those that students engage in outside of the actual, regular school

curriculum, according to Annu & Junita's (2013) research on the "Impact of Extra-curricular

Activities on Students." They can be found in our classrooms at every level. Extracurricular activities

come in a variety of forms, including drama, music, art, sports, clubs, and student newspapers.

Divergent viewpoints exist about the definition of an extracurricular activity. Academic clubs and

intramural sports are two examples of in-school involvement activities; pro-social activities like

dancing, team sports, and performing arts are a few examples of activities that take place outside of
the regular school day. The future success of individuals who participate may be positively impacted

by varying degrees of activity involvement and participation.

In this case, social skills to be applied include communication skills and students' self-

confidence, according to Mancha, Ahmad (2016) and their research on "Co-curricular activities and

it's effect on social skills". Extracurricular activities are another type of education that is taught

outside of the classroom. Student participation in co-curricular activities helps to promote students'

social skills in order to enter any field for the future prospect to produce skilled human capital in

terms of academics and character. Extracurricular activities will impart spiritual, leadership,

teamwork, and self-confidence lessons to the pupils.

2.2 Related Studies

According to Singh (2017), the process of education is a continuous and lifelong endeavour that

can be divided into two parts: curricular activities and co-curricular activities. His studies on the

"Effect of Co-curricular Activities on Academic Achievement of Students" support this assertion.

The study came to the conclusion that co-curricular activities generally had a favorable impact on

students' academic achievement and personality development. Additionally, it supports academic

endeavors in achieving education's primary objective of changing students' behavior.

In particular, this study examined student participants and nonparticipants in extracurricular

activities and their academic performance. Freeman (2017) cites his research regarding "a

relationship between extracurricular activity participation and academic achievement as measured by

the composite score throughout a student's attendance in high school."

In addition to supporting preexisting theories on the academic and skills acquisition effect of

extracurricular activities, the article contributes by identifying a wide range of additionalities to the

student experience that participants attribute to their participation in extracurricular activities.

Buckley, & Lee (2018) report that a significant body of educational research has investigated the

impact of these activities on academic performance and the acquisition of discipline complementary

skills and competencies.

In their research on the "Correlation Between Co-curricular Activities and Academic

Achievement of Students," Batool and Ahmad (2020) define co-curricular as an extracurricular

activity that is sponsored and run by the school and provides learning opportunities and opportunities

for character development that are relevant to the curriculum. Co-curricular activities are voluntary

or not included in the regular school curriculum, are unmanaged, and do not earn credit. It includes

the competitions, debates, assessments, performances, hands-on learning activities, student

organizations , associations, and affiliations that oversee those activities. Participation in

extracurricular activities and pupils' academic success are somewhat positively correlated. The

conclusion is that extracurricular activities have a significant impact on college students' academic

performance. The pupils who take part in student accomplishment in academics and extracurricular

activities. The conclusion is that extracurricular activities have a significant impact on college

students' academic success. The percentages of students who actively participate in co-curricular

activities are higher than those of non-participating pupils.

Kung, McQuarrie, and Brigham's research on "Exploring the Relationship between Student

Success and Participation in Extracurricular Activities" reveals that by emphasizing strengths over

weaknesses, traditionally underrepresented students—who are frequently deemed "at-risk" of not

enrolling in college or finishing their education—are able to persevere until graduation. More over

one-third of the participants engaged in extracurricular activities, and most of these students believed

that these activities contributed to their success. We investigate the claims made by students

regarding the impact of their involvement in extracurricular activities on their academic

achievement.
