LESSON 2. THE HISTORICAL
DEVELOPMENT OF TEACHING
AS A PROFESSION IN THE PHILIPPINES
(WEEK 3)

POST-COMPETENCY CHECKLIST

1. If you say “YES” to your call and mission to teach in this life, how you are going to
prepare yourself in this four-year teacher education course.

Before starting my journey in this course, I have received few advices from my
elder, my brother, sisters and my cousins. Most of them are from education or teaching
field too so their words would help me get through this for they have been in the same
path. It is important to be passionate on what you are doing and I could say that
passion and dedication serves as fuels that would encourage help me in a long run while
I am on the process of my first four-year teaching degree in college. In my four years, I
need to set a standard for myself. I need to aim high grades and practice my public
speaking skills. I want to make my parents proud of me. It is also crucial to practice how
to handle my emotions and should be aware of my actions. I have to keep in my mind
that I am a future teacher and my mission is to educate my future learners academically
and morally. I should stand as a role model for them.

2. To be true to your vocation and mission as a teacher, you have to “have more, do more
in order to be more” to your students and all others to whom you were sent. What does
“do more, have more in order to be more” mean?

In my own interpretation of “have more, do more in order to be more” is to not

be satisfied on what you just had. In this field, if you are given a chance to do better
and to aim higher, do so. A basic instance of it is when you finally graduated in your
four-year degree in college, if there is an opportunity or a given chance to study for
masters’ degree, then grab it. You should not be contented. It might sound bad but
contentment is only for those who doesn’t want to spread their wings wider. Knowledge
has no limit and it is better to strive harder than never.

3. Some education institution have “sending off” ceremony for student teachers before
education student go for practice teaching. What is the significance of this ceremony?

Both the university's teachers, education faculty, and future educators view the
ceremony as a significant passage rite. It recognizes the meaningful implications of the
teaching profession and the unique nature of this distinct career field, which is made up
of individuals who have a strong commitment to the future of young people.
