15. Column I show different ways in which tunnel ABC or ABCD is dug on earth. O is the center. In case (a), (b) and (c) particle
is released from point A such that the point of release is just inside the earth’s surface. In case (d), the particle is thrown from
A towards C with speed . Wherever tunnel is bent, arrangement is made such that the particle undergoes elastic collision and
moves smoothly along the next part of the tunnel. Column II shows the time period of periodic motion of particle in the
cases shown in column I. Match the cases with their respective time periods. Given . Here R means radius of earth.
a. p.
b. q.

c. r.

d. s.

AB = AC = BC = R and centroid of tunnel is center of earth.

16. In case ‘a’ and ‘b’, four particle each of mass ‘m’ are fixed at the four vertices of a rectangle and a particle of mass ‘M’ is
placed at the center of the rectangle where as in case ‘c’ and ‘d’ two identical rings each of mass ‘m’ and radius ‘a’ are kept
fixed coaxially and a particle of mass ‘M’ is kept at the midpoint of the line joining the centers of two rings. Assume that
only force acting on M is gravitational attractions from ‘m’.

a. p. If slightly displaced along Y-axis, particle M will undergo
simple harmonic oscillations.

b. q. If slightly displaced along X-axis, the particle M will not

undergo simple harmonic oscillations.

c. r. If displaced slightly along Z-axis, the particle M will

undergo simple harmonic oscillations.

d. s. If slightly displaced along X-axis, the particle M will

undergo simple harmonic oscillations with time period

17. An object is raised to a height Re (Re is the radius of the earth)

and projected horizontally as shown in the figure. In Column I
different velocities of projection are given and in column II, the
characteristic of velocity is given. Match the columns.
Column I Column II
a. p. Minimum velocity so that the particle doesn’t collide with the
earth’s surface
b. q. Velocity such that the particle undergoes parabolic motion
c. r. Velocity so that it undergoes elliptical motion with point of
projection as the apehilion
d. s. Velocity such that the particle undergoes circular motion
t. Velocity such that the particle undergoes elliptical motion with
the point of projection as perihilion

COMPREHENSION A particle inside a uniform sphere always gets a

gravitational force of attraction from the sphere which is directly proportional to
the distance from the center of the sphere and is always directed towards the
center of the sphere.
A smooth tunnel ABC is dug on earth as shown in the figure. A particle is released
from a point A (from just inside the earth’s surface). Because of gravitational
attraction from the earth, it moves parallel to the tunnel AB. At B it suffers elastic
collision with earth’s surface so that immediately after the collision, it starts
moving parallel to the tunnel BC. Tunnel thickness is negligible.
Answer the following questions.

18. Velocity of the particle when it reaches B is

a. b. c. d.

19. Time period of oscillation of the particle is

a. b. c. d.

20. If is the net acceleration of the particle and is the velocity of the particle at any time ‘t’ after the start of the motion, then for ,
during the oscillatory motion of the particle along ABC starting from A at t = 0, the value of reaches its highest value for the
first time at t =
a. b. c. d.

21. Two tunnels are dug through the earth as shown in the figure. O is the center of
the earth. A particle ‘B’ is released from rest from the position shown and travels
through the tunnel. At the same time particle from A is projected towards the
center O with a velocity ‘v’ such that both A and B collide before they could
change their direction of motion. Then the velocity ‘v’ given to A is
a. b. c. d.

22. A tunnel is dug through the diameter of the earth. In the tunnel, a particle is projected towards the surface of the earth from
a point, which is at a distance of R/4 from the center of the earth. Particle looses its entire velocity by the time its distance
from center becomes from the center and then starts returning towards the center. The time after projection at which it
comes to the center of the earth for the first time is
a. b. c. d.

25. A spherical body of radius R consists of a fluid whose density varies with the distance (r) from the center as and is in
equilibrium under its own gravity. If P(r) is the pressure at r (r<R), then the correct option(s) is/are
a. P(r = 0) = 0 b.
c. d.

26. In a binary star system of two stars of mass m1 and m2, choose the correct relationships. KE = kinetic energy, v = velocity,
L = angular momentum and A = Areal velocity
