Chapter 1
Introduction
In recent years, the integration of technological devices into educational settings has advanced,
reflecting broader technological advancements and increasing accessibility. Despite this rapid adoption, there
remains a limited understanding of how these devices specifically affect student learning outcomes. As
opposed to research placing the value of these devices in terms of digitality, we make use of theories of
embodiment to understand how the physicality of the devices can support learning and sense making. With
the advent of technology, the way we teach and learn has greatly changed. Today, many great schools use
technological devices to facilitate learning. A great number of research found that teaching with technology
can enhance learning (Bray & Tangney, 2017; Hillmayr et al., 2020; Olsher & Thurm, 2021). These studies
have made it clear that the implementation of technological devices in classroom can greatly contribute to
creating an effective learning environment and student learning.
However, in an era of rapid technological advancements, incorporating technology into every aspect
of education has presented both an opportunity and a challenge. The digital age has brought about significant
shifts, changing traditional approaches and creating new opportunities for learning and education. Today's
youth are growing up in a world where technology is always at their fingertips. Children are becoming
increasingly interested in social media applications and online sites. Furthermore, cell phones, computers,
tablets, free Wi-Fi, gaming systems, and electronic toys are very popular in today's society. Educators
constantly seek for technological tools that can increase the learning of their students. Technology has been
considered as an excellent asset in classrooms that has improved education but has a negative impact on
student learning. Education is rapidly becoming time and space-free thanks to developments in information
technology. But every student still has to be linked to a support system that promotes lifetime learning
attainment.
Furthermore, the integration of technological devices in education also enhances student learning
outcomes by fostering engagement, personalizing learning experiences, and developing essential 21st-century
skills. Research indicates that technology-enhanced instruction promotes active learning and accommodates
diverse learning styles, leading to improved academic performance and deeper understanding of content
( Sultan, Bader, Aljehani, 2024. The integration of emerging technologies into the teaching and learning
process is no longer an option, but rather a requirement for educators considering the level of technology
infusion in education, particularly in relation to the changing learning environment, the demand for flexibility
in methodology, and the need to enhance creativity and innovation in learning.

To summarize, the challenge of incorporating technology into the teaching and learning process has
become an ongoing issue. Common reasons for the limited use of technology to enhance education
include lack of computers, lack of technological knowledge, and technology intimidation. While these factors
may have an impact on the success of technology integration, it is important to recognize that the ability of
educators to examine the relationship between technology and education may play a role in their success in
employing technology for learning. And although technology presents transformative opportunities for
enhancing educational outcomes, its successful implementation hinges on strategic planning, leadership
support, and addressing equity issues in access (Chima, Abimbola, Eden., Onyebuchi, Nneamaka, Chisom.,
Idowu, Sulaimon, Adeniyi. (2024).
Therefore, this study seeks to explore how technological devices specifically affect the academic
performance of students and how technology integration contributes to their learning engagement..
Research Hypothesis
Ha: There is a significant relationship between the use of technological devices and the engagement of
students in learning.
Ho: There is no significant relationship between the use of technological devices and the engagement of
students in learning.
Ha: There is a significant relationship between technology integration and the academic achievement of
students.
Ho: There is no significant relationship between technology integration and the academic achievement of
students.
Despite the growing availability and use of technological devices in educational environments, there
is still a significant gap in comprehending how these tools directly impact the performance of students. While
many educators and institutions have adopted technology in the classroom, the effectiveness of these
integrations in enhancing student performance remains inconsistent and under-researched.

The schematic diagram shown in Figure 1 illustrates the conceptual framework of the study, which uses the
input-process-output (IPO). The inputs of this framework are profile of the students and the effects of
technology integration to their academic performance and engagement in learning. Kulshreshtha et al., (2023)
stated that Technology has the inherent ability to captivate and sustain students' interest through dynamic
multimedia content, interactive simulations, and real-world applications, thereby potentially elevating
engagement levels. They also stated that technology can positively influence student engagement and
academic performance.
The second box in the paradigm shows the process of collecting and analysis of data in this study which uses
survey questionnaire. Karunarathna, I. et al., (2024) stated that the questionnaire is one of the most widely
used tools for collecting data. It consists of a set of questions designed to gather information from respondents
within a specific population. The data collected through questionnaires are original and cannot be obtained
from secondary sources, making this method crucial for both qualitative and quantitative research.
Questionnaires are especially useful when dealing with large sample sizes, where personal interaction with
each participant may not be feasible.
Lastly, the third box contains the outputs of this study which is to give suggestions on how to enhance the
academic performance and learning engagement of students. It also contains the plan of action in order to help
the students benefit from the use of technology in education.
This framework guides the research in exploring the effects of technological devices to the academic
performance and engagement of students in order to provide a plan of action to help them benefit from the use
of technology in education.
The respondents of this study are 60 Senior High School students from the
Lyceum of Tuao Inc. The only aspects that will be involved in this study is how Technological Devices
and its integration to education can affect the academic performance and learning experience of students. This
study does not include their perceptions and beliefs about the topic. Other grade levels apart from grade 11
and 12 and other schools in Tuao are also not included in this study.

Chapter II
In order to provide the researchers with a good background in writing their proposed research,
they reviewed some related literature and studies. They went over related theses, dissertations, journals, books
and other related publications in the internet to gain insights and thorough understanding of their proposed
study.
The utilization of technology in education has several positive learning effects. First off, the
utilization of technology enhances students’ engagement and motivation by giving interactive and
multimedia-rich learning experiences that captivate their interest and stimulate their curiosity. Moreover, In
educational conditions, the traditional learning environment has gradually been replaced by digital technology
integration. Teachers can use a wide range of technical devices and applications in the classroom these days. It
has been discovered that integrating digital technology into teaching and learning is linked to both improving
academic achievement and boosting the efficacy of knowledge production and delivery. According to
Abulibdeh et al. (2024), in the digital age, harnessing technology integration in education has become not just
advantageous but imperative for fostering a dynamic learning environment that caters to the diverse needs of
students.
In addition, The transition toward the seamless integration of technology into educational processes
has resulted in significant developments that have redefined traditional teaching strategies and created fresh
possibilities for creative learning. By arming students with the necessary tools, technology integration helps
them meet the challenges of the modern workforce. providing them with the fundamentals of digital literacy
and introducing them with new technologies. Technology enables students to have individual learning
experiences that are targeted to their particular needs and learning preferences. Van Petegem et al. (2021)
stated that, as technology continues to permeate every aspect of society, proficiency in utilizing digital tools
and navigating online resources has become indispensable for success in academia and beyond.
Furthermore, According to Abid Haleem et al. (2022), digital technology application has already
become necessary due to the globalization of education. There are online services accessible for conducting
lessons, exchanging materials, administering tests, and handling the regular operations of educational
establishments. The skills and traits that students have gained will be crucial to their success in the workplace.
Digital technologies and educational resources make the teaching-learning process more effective and

enhance the environment in the classroom. Additionally, they provide each educational establishment with
additional adaptability and curriculum adjustment in accordance with needs of every pupil.
On the other hand, Criollo-C, S. et al. (2021) stated that mobile technology offers many advantages
and benefits, but there are also issues to be addressed to avoid complications when using them. Teachers face
an inherent challenge that involves multiple factors. First, there is the generation of "digital immigrants" who
are attempting to pass on knowledge to a new generation of "digital natives." These two groups have a
significant technology divide in addition to speaking different languages. Many educators lack the necessary
skills to effectively use mobile technology into their lessons. Instructors might have to devote extra time to
creating content for students' mobile devices or keeping an eye on their learning outside of the classroom.
Many educators still lack knowledge in utilizing these tools to teach. This signifies that technology in
education also has negative effects when educators face these challenges because they need to adapt to the
integration of technological devices.
A large number of educators in the 21st century believe they are not provided with enough time or
tools to learn how to successfully incorporate technology into their lessons. Because of the speed at which
technology is developing, many experienced educators are not properly trained in using the newest tools. The
experience of teachers is vital. Improved student outcomes and the growth of instructors' own material,
pedagogy, and technology skills are two advantages of professional development for educators (Ali, Thomas,
Ahmed, Ahmed, & Ahmed, 2020). They also emphasized how important it is to give educators
extensive training that is relevant to the subjects they will be teaching while utilizing technology. High-quality
subject-matter knowledge is stressed in professional development events, which are the most effective
strategies to help teachers improve their practices. More opportunities should exist for students and teachers to
discuss what they are doing and how they are learning in the classroom. The importance of integrating
technology into lectures has grown since teachers nowadays must be just as technologically literate as their
students.
Additionally, the public's perception of a school's ability to provide a great education is often based on
the abilities of its teachers and the resources at available to them. A common topic of discussion among
teacher educators and scholar of teacher education is how to enhance the use of effective teaching practices in
teacher education programs. If you want to be a good teacher, you need to focus on more than just one area of
knowledge and use technology in all of them (Ali, Busch, Qaisrani, & Rehman, 2020). A deeper
understanding of the value of professional development for educators and the best ways to improve their skills

and knowledge has resulted from changes in our educational goals, curricular priorities, and understanding of
how teachers and students learn and think.
Teachers using online education must carefully consider the curriculum, support resources, and online
teaching tools. Following the initial enthusiasm and relentless commitment to maintaining learning continuity,
teachers encountered occupational stress as a result of increasing workloads, inadequate digital skills, and
digital pedagogy. According to Cramarenco, R. E. et al. (2023), sustainable and innovative online education
depends greatly on the positive perspective of new forms of education and their level of acceptance level.
Positive perspectives depend on student digital readiness and accessibility to educational platforms. Negative
perceptions are influenced by problems faced by the students such as access to technology, limited
technological skills, limited or lack of regular engagement with professors and colleagues.
Although there are many benefits and good perceptions about the integration of technology into
education, there are still instances where many educators and students lack knowledge and literacy in
technology and struggle to keep up with the advancements of tools that they can now utilize to enhance the
teaching and learning process.
Related Studies
In a study conducted by Fälth, L., & Selenius, H. (2024) about the Primary school teachers’ use and
perception of digital technology in early reading and writing education in inclusive settings, they have found
that 82% of the teachers were interested in teaching young students to read and write using digital technology.
More than 50% of the teachers included digital technology to promote students’ learning of phonological
awareness, decoding skills, vocabulary, spelling, or text editing every week, and 74% used digital technology
to support students with special needs every week. Those who considered digital technology as a facilitator of
all students’ participation in early reading and writing education also stated that they used digital technology
to promote different reading and writing skills more frequently. Their impression of their ability to operate
digital technology was also favorably correlated with their belief that it can help learners participate in reading
and writing instruction.
Similarly, a research on Examining the influence of the performance of mobile devices on teaching
quality based on the technological acceptance mode conducted by Chen, X., & Chen, R. (2024) showed that
the “Internet information environment” had a significant positive impact on “perceived usefulness” and
“perceived ease of use”. Amongst them, perceived usefulness had a significant positive effect on the use
attitude, and use attitude had a significant positive effect on behaviour intention. The results confirmed that
the perceived benefit and accessibility of iPad smart devices are rapidly and positively impacted by an

excellent information network environment; additionally, the perceived usefulness of iPad smart devices has a
positive impact on instructors' perceptions of them.
Furthermore, a study on the effects of the use of mobile devices on the E-learning process and
perceived learning outcomes in university online education was conducted by Eom, S. (2023). The results of
this research showed that use of mobile devices positively affects student-instructor and student-student
dialogues. It also facilitates the self-regulation process, which in turn positively affects the learning outcomes.
Integrating mobile technology enables educational institutions to design and build distance learning systems
that allow students to be highly flexible with their locations and schedules in the learning process.
On the other hand, Beneito, P., & Vicente-Chirivella, O. (2020) conducted a research regarding the
banning of mobile phones at schools and its effects on bullying and academic performance. In this study, they
have concluded that d that the mobile ban noticeably reduced bullying incidence, particularly among 12-to-14
year old kids and 15-to-17 year old adolescents. Also, using the results of five waves of the PISA assessment
by region, they found positive effects of the mobile ban on the students’ scores in maths and sciences.
Synthesis
The related literature and studies that were presented will be utilized as a guide for the researchers.
Incorporating technological devices into education can significantly impact how the educators teach and how
the students learn. Integrating technology in learning provides students with enhanced information access and
better experience in learning. On the other hand, some educators and students struggle to utilize and
understand these technological tools because of the lack of skills and knowledge. To summarize, although
integrating technological devices into education has its down sides, there are endless benefits that can
significantly improve the teaching and learning process inside the school.
