What is a trade union ?


Trade union is an association of workers in a particular trade, industry, or company
created for the purpose of:
• Securing improvements in pay.
• benefits.
• Working condition
• Social & political status through collective bargaining
They operate under constitutional mechanisms and adhere to globally accepted
principles laid down by organizations like the International Labour Organization (ILO).

Functions of trade
union ?
Trade unions undertake the following functions:

• Achieving higher wages & better working & living conditions for member
• Acquiring control of industry by workers
• Minimizing the helplessness of the individual workers
• Raising the status of workers
• Generating the self confidence of the worker and a feeling that he is not simply a cog wheel
• Encouraging sincerity and discipline in workers
• Taking up welfare measures for improving the moral of the workers

Historical background

• The genesis of trade unions in India dates back to the second half of the nineteenth century.
• Poor working conditions and long working hours were major concerns for industrial
workers.
• Although early unions had limitations, they effectively presented collective demands and
aimed to reform existing issues.
• The Trade Unions Act, 1926 defines trade unions and guarantees the right to form them as a
fundamental right under Article 19 (1) of the Indian Constitution.

Historical background I

• First Factory Commission (1875): Established in Bombay to regulate working conditions.


• First Factories Act (1881): Passed but had limited effectiveness.
• Second Factory Commission (1884): Formed to address Act's shortcomings.
• Worker Mobilization by Mr. Lokhande: Organized a worker conference, resulting in a
memorandum signed by 5,300 workers.
• First Workers' Union: Formed under Mr. Lokhande's leadership, marking a milestone in India's
labor movement in 1890.
