We Filipinos are known to have distinct features in terms of values, beliefs and practices
from other countries. To highlight some, these comprise humor and positivity, flexibility
and adaptability, faith and religion, Filipino hospitality, respect for the elderly, industrious
attitude, and generosity.
As a Filipino, I am proud to uphold these values in real life situation. To mention few of
the concrete examples, let me unveil some of my experiences in relation to practicing
some of our common values as Filipinos.
First, in my life. This is being positive. Fifteen years ago, I was stocked with my career
being a teacher. After I graduated college last 2007, I was not able to take the board for
Licensure Examination for Teacher because of the technician problem with my birth
certificate. Due to financial constraint, I was not able to fix it right away. But I spoke to
my heart that one day I will be able to take the board exam in God’s perfect time. Then
last 2022, I got my paper fixed through a help from heaven above. Someone gave his
trust and pushed me to petition my birth certificate. Without delay, I immediately took
two board examinations the same year. The LICENSURE EXAMINATION FOR
TEACHERS and the LICENSURE EXAMINATION FOR AGRICULTURE and praise the
Lord, I passed those two exams. Being positive is a great motivation to cooperate God
with His beautiful plan in our lives and I was able to prove it myself. That’s who Filipino
is, always positive even in a negative situation.
Second, in my family. That is being godly and religious. Having a family is not an easy
thing. It takes a lot of ourselves to place our family in a right spotlight. But if there is
God’s presence in our family, we will be amazed on what His powerful spirit can do. In
our family, we always see to it that everyone of us can go to church every Sunday,
attend prayer meetings every Wednesday, and joined fellowships whenever there’s an
opportunity. Me and my husband have our morning devotion together and, in the night,
we practiced evening devotional with the kids. And as we do it, all is well with us in
thoughts, words and deeds. Although sometimes we slip but there’s always that heart
to come to the Lord and ask for forgiveness because as He said in His word, in 1
John 1:9 “ If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us from our sins…”
Third is in my work. This is being flexible. Last 2023, a newly-opened high school was
established in our municipality and I was one of the hired teachers in that school. Since
there were only few of us teachers, I was given subjects that are not in line with my
major. But because I am a Filipino, I needed to be flexible. I did not complain, instead I
prayed to God and accepted the assigned subjects although I had to exert more efforts
to study those but at the end of the school year, everything went through well.
