Dolphins

A dolphin is a mammal which lives in the sea and looks like a large fish
with a pointed mouth. Unfortunately they are in danger

Since the 1980s, river dolphin populations have plummeted by 73

percent due to an onslaught ofthreats, including. unsustainable fishing
practices, hydroelectric dams, pollution from agriculture, industry and
mining, and habitat loss. The recent deaths of more than 150 river
dolphins in the Amazon’s drought-ravaged Lake Tefé show that climate
change is becoming an increasingly serious threat to their survival.

The endangered Indus River dolphin population has nearly doubled in

the past 20 years due to collective action by government, communities
and NGOs, includingthe contribution of WWF. However, there are only
about 2,000 Indus River dolphins left and WWF is working with
communities to reduce pollution, free dolphins entangled in fishing gear
and rescue dolphins trapped in irrigation canals.

Dolphins were discovered during the Neogene Cenozoic (period

between 23 and 2.6 million years ago)¡It’s a shame that such a fantastic
animal is in danger!

¿How can we help these animals?

•Raise awareness, for example, by supporting World River Dolphin Day.

•Collaborate with industries to address water quality and quantity

issues.

• Promote river dolphin research and threat monitoring

• Eradicate unsustainable fishing practices

• Create a network of protected river habitats

• Increase the effectiveness of river dolphin management

Hi, I'm Teo. I want to tell you about some ways to prevent the extinction of freshwater
dolphins. Nut first i am going to tell you the reasons why they are becoming extinct.
One of them is unsustainable fishing, which is industrial/uncontrolled fishing. A lot of
dolphins are caught, so I propose the following: Government are going to control fishing and
force industries to use rods and not nets. Or fishing in places where dolphins are NOT
found.
Another reason is hydroelectric dams. These cause reduction of oxygen in water, changes
in temperature and greater proliferation of diseases. To reverse this I propose to stop
using these dams and be going to start using windmills.
Also, the causes of the possible extinction of dolphins are pollution from agriculture,
industry and mining.
Agricultural pollution generates greenhouse gases for example. Pesticides as well, which
generate accumulations of pesticides in the soil altering microbial processes and many
other reasons (which are really too many).
Regarding industrial pollution, the main reason is the large scale burning of fossil fuels
such as oil, coal, gas and also the poisoned waste water that pollutes land, rivers and
lagoons. This damages water, air, soil and human health.
And finally mining. Some minerals like pyrite when in contact with water and air generate
sulfuric acid that affects water and aquatic life.
Farmers will be going to:
Stop using pesticides in agriculture to obtain natural and fresh products without chemicals,
and thus take care of the environment, also fertilize in a balanced way and regulate their
use.
Use other types of fuels in industries, such as biofuel, made from waste. Besides being a
form of renewable energy, it could reduce waste and make a conscious use of energy.

¿What will happens if dolphins extinguish?

Dolphins are important predators in their ecosystems, their extinction

can make a unbalance food chain and affect another species who
depend of them for food.
That species are small fish, mackerel, squids and smalls whales. The
other species interact with dolphins and collaborate, to help each other
hunt and find food.
