Assignment 23
Assignment 23
Assignment 23
This assignment is designed specifically to assess the required graduate attribute for this module.
The GA assessed is GA 9: Independent learning, which will be assessed using the attached
rubric. The GA must be achieved to obtain a duly performance to qualify for the examination as
stated in the learner guide.
Designing a feedback control system involves the selection of controlled and manipulated
variables, and sensors for measuring the controlled variables. In addition, we have to know the
possible disturbances occurring in the process in order to design a control system with good
dynamic performance.
In this exercise, you are going to select the variables to be controlled for the CSTR in Figure 1 to
satisfy the seven control objectives.

Tasks
a) Identify all control and manipulated variables and share a rationale for your choice as per
knowledge of the process engineer.
b) Tabulate all selected controlled and manipulated variables including motivation for the choice
of measuring instruments, the measuring instruments should be in line with the current trends.
c) Choose a control system design and motivate your choice, once done draw the completed
design both as P& I diagram and express it as transfer functions of a block diagram.
d) Develop design equations or modelling of the heat exchanger system (Hint: use temperature to
base your design equations)
REQUIREMENTS:
1) A typed report with a standard cover page, assignment and GA rubric. State and justify all
assumptions made.
2) Resubmission will be granted for 45–49% and for GAs less than 75% (3)
3) Late assignments will not be accepted.
4) Should a report or assessment not be submitted for any reason by the due date and time, the
student will automatically receive a zero until a report is received where the penalty will be
executed.
5) The final assignment mark, will contribute towards the DP.
