Method of assessment
This assessment is a practical simulated role play with oral questions and completion of workplace
documents.
Overview of assessment
This is a practical /oral assessment where you will be observed and assessed in a simulated aged
care work environment, providing care to one (1) person. The assessment consists of three (3) tasks.
You will need to successfully complete all three (3) tasks and respond satisfactorily to oral questions
throughout the assessment and complete workplace documents.
Task/s to be assessed
This is a practical /oral assessment where you will be observed and assessed in a simulated aged
care work environment, providing care to one (1) person. The assessment consists of three (3) tasks.
You need to successfully complete all three (3) tasks and respond satisfactorily to oral questions
throughout the assessment.
Task 1:
You will play the role of a new Personal Care Worker (Sam Pearce) and will participate in a meeting
with your Care Manager (Debra Sinclair) to discuss job role requirements and specific tasks according
to workplace documents. Your lecturer will ask a range of oral questions relating to the tasks you are
to carry out as part of your job role.
During task one (1) of the practical observation assessment, you will complete tasks to demonstrate
your ability to:
· Use digital technology to access workplace information.
· Complete a workplace checklist.
· Outline the purpose and key components of individualised plans.
· Recognise and clarify scope of own job role – including reporting line
· Identify roles of interdisciplinary team members.
During task two of the practical observation assessment, you will complete tasks to demonstrate your
ability to:
· Use person-centered communication.
· Comply with professional conduct requirements.
· Meet privacy and confidentiality requirements.
· Gain consent prior to undertaking activities
· Recognise signs of abuse.
· Outline specific tasks required to be undertaken during their shift.
Task 3:
You will report and document incidents according to workplace requirements.
During task three of the practical observation assessment, you will demonstrate your ability to:
· Work with and report to interdisciplinary team members
· Report signs of abuse
· Use technology to engage with people and the organisation.
· Complete a workplace report using template from Banksia Care staff portal –Incident, injury,
trauma and illness record, and the Statement of accountability checklist provided by the
lecturer during the assessment.
· Maintain and store workplace information (documents to be stored in LEARN).
· Meet privacy and confidentiality requirements.
· Recognise how to monitor your own stress levels when working with people in care.
· Understand how to use self-care strategies and seek support.
Time allowed
Pre-reading of the scenario setting for the tasks - 10 minutes for reading
Task 1: 15 Minutes
Task 2: 20 minutes.
Task 3: 15 minutes
Each task contains oral questions that will be asked during the roleplay
Or as a negotiated ‘expected timeframe’ with your assessor. This is only adjusted if the task is
expected to differ significantly.
Location of assessment
The assessment will take place in a simulated aged care work environment, which will be in a:
Face to Face setting,
You will be advised by your assessor of the correct location prior to your assessment date.
Decision making rules
To achieve a satisfactory outcome, you must satisfactorily demonstrate all assessment requirements,
including oral questions.
If you do not achieve a satisfactory result (i.e. not met all criteria) on the first attempt, you are entitled
to a second attempt.
You are entitled to two (2) attempts to achieve each assessment task within any unit enrolment
period.

You will need:
· Access to a computer
· Login to Banksia Care staff portal: http://banksia.eduworks.com.au (to be provided by lecturer
at the workshop for this unit)
· Role play instructions
· Access to the following supporting documents prior to your assessment
o Personal Care Worker job description (to be provided at the workshop for this unit)
o Staff Health and Wellbeing policy and procedure
o Mandatory Reporting Policy and Procedure
o Incident, injury, Trauma and Illness policy and procedure
o Communication Protocol (email)
o Workplace report: Incident, injury, trauma and illness record – download from Banksia
Care staff portal
o Statement of accountability checklist provided by the lecturer during the assessment.
Your Assessor will provide verbal feedback, both for Satisfactory or Not Satisfactory performance
following completion of the assessment task
The feedback will also be recorded in LEARN
If you have not met the requirements of the assessment, please seek advice from your Assessor
regarding further training and reassessment
Re-assessment needs to be negotiated with your assessor.
Where immediate feedback cannot occur - as per the TAFESA resulting policy, the assessor will
provide feedback within two weeks of the completion/submission.

Scenario:
In this role play you will be playing the role of Sam Pearce, a new Personal Care Worker at Banksia
Care residential aged care facility.
It is your first shift after completing most of your induction tasks and working with a ‘buddy’ for the past
week.
You have received the following email from the Care Manager.
You are about to meet with Deb Sinclair the Care Manager at her office, as she requested.
Subject: Welcome
Good morning,
Thank you for your first week at Banksia Care in the position of Personal Care Worker. I am happy
to hear that you have completed most of the induction tasks and are now ready to start shift
work.
Please come to my office 20 minutes prior to your first rostered shift, to finalise the induction
process.
I will run through some questions relating to your job role and tasks specific to you and other team
members and complete some documentation.

A lecturer will play the role of the Care Manager, Deb Sinclair.
You are expected to knock on the office door, introduce yourself and interact with the Care Manager,
completing any tasks she asks of you and respond satisfactorily to questions she asks.

Scenario:
In this role play you will be playing the role of Sam Pearce, a new Personal Care Worker at Banksia
Care residential aged care facility.
Part 1:
You have just finished meeting with the Care Manager to finalise your induction and have now gone to
the work area where you will be working your first shift.
When you arrive, you are met by the RN in charge of that area.
The RN will discuss aspects of your work role for this evening’s shift and provide you with some
documents, including a care plan.
You will need to complete any tasks the RN asks of you and respond to questions satisfactorily.
She will then tell you that you can start your shift.
Part 2:
It is now around 2000 hrs (8 pm). You have been working through the tasks outlined on the Shift
Routine and providing care and support to a range of clients, including Sharon Joyce Curtin. You will
have a copy of Sharon’s individual care plan.
Sharon is in her room where you will now go to provide the assistance, she requires at this time
according to her care plan.
You will need to interact appropriately with Sharon, respond to the situation and any requests she
has.
In completing the role play, you are expected to demonstrate the ability to:
o Work with and report to interdisciplinary team members
o Meet legal requirements of your work role
o Use technology to engage with people and the organisation.
o Complete a workplace report
o Maintain and store workplace information.
o Meet privacy and confidentiality requirements.
o Recognise how to monitor your own stress levels when working with people in care.

Scenario:
In this role play you will be playing the role of Sam Pearce, a new Personal Care Worker at Banksia
Care residential aged care facility. In the previous scenario, you were working with Sharon Joyce
Curtin.
During your interaction with Sharon, she mentioned a situation and made a request that you now
need to address, according to your work role and workplace policies and procedures.
You need to interact with the Registered Nurse and undertake any tasks she asks you to complete
and satisfactorily answer any questions she will ask you.
