Activity: Historical Travel Diaries and Postcards
Objective: Students will explore Rizal’s experiences in Japan, the United States, and London by creating fictionalized travel diaries and
postcards that reflect his impressions and experiences in each place.
Instructions:
1. Divide the Class into Three Groups: (follow the groupings above)
o Group 1: Rizal’s Japan (February 28 - April 13, 1888)
o Group 2: Rizal’s Visit to the United States (April 28 - May 16, 1888)
o Group 3: Rizal’s Stay in London (May 1888 - March 1889)
2. Part 1: Create a Travel Diary
Each group will create a fictional travel diary from Rizal’s perspective during his time in their assigned location. The diary
should:
o Be written in first-person as if Rizal is documenting his daily thoughts and observations.
o Include details from the module, such as his interactions, places he visited, and people he met (e.g., Juan Perez
Caballero in Japan, his impressions of the American people, Dr. Antonio Ma. Regidor in London).
o Express Rizal’s feelings both positive and negative about the culture, environment, and social issues he encountered.
o Be at least three entries long (each entry representing a different moment during his stay).
3. Part 2: Design Postcards
Students will create postcards that Rizal might have sent to his friends and family back home. Each group should:
o Design a postcard front featuring a famous landmark or scene Rizal would have seen during his time in their assigned
location (e.g., cherry blossoms in Japan, the bustling streets of New York, or the British Museum in London).
o Write a short message on the back of the postcard in Rizal’s voice, giving a quick summary of his feelings and
experiences.
4. Part 3: Present to the Class
Each group will present their travel diaries and postcards to the class:
o One or two students will read out key excerpts from the travel diary.
o The group will show their postcards and explain the significance of the images and messages.
Materials Needed:
Paper or Notebooks for writing the travel diaries.
Art Supplies (markers, colored pencils, or digital design tools) for creating the postcards.
Research time (students can use textbooks or internet resources for additional context).
Evaluation Criteria:
Accuracy: How well did the group reflect Rizal’s actual experiences and the historical context of each place?
Creativity: How original and imaginative were the travel diary entries and postcard designs?
Presentation: How engaging and clear was the group’s presentation to the class?
